The amount of young brothers I drove past everyday chilling on the corners selling their cheap weed not looking into trade school is sad. :francis:
A lot of them have trades. A lot have learned skills in job corps. A lot of these kids do not want to work. I've seen kids start 50K jobs and quit because they wanted to be rappers or got fired because they called out becasue they rather party and run the streets than be at work. You 18-19 and you just throw 50g's away?

Security =/= Wealth. There's plenty of secure jobs that never give you enough money for retirement

Alot of "Secure" jobs are usually the ones where you won't quit because your scared to take chances

A 100k job + pension + 401k beats not having a pension and generous pension. It's not that complicated.

The point was that private jobs also give out 100k salary just like Union jobs, which was in my original post. Looks like you're arguing just to argue

It's amazing how these threads never fail to discuss the monetary reward, but always fail to detail the schooling, certification, and paths.

My trade, Energy Auditor, requires a valid driver's license, the ability to lift 40-50 lbs., the ability to do simple math, and a High School diploma or equivalent. The certs required (and optional) are listed here:

Certification Grid | Building Performance Institute, Inc.

Every cert after 'Primary' and 'Core' just increases your earning potential.

I wasn't arguing that you couldn't eat as a non-union HVAC. I was explaining to you the tremendous security that union jobs provide with the pension and generous 401k contribution. If you do the math, @Luck or whoever it was is probably seeing 50k a year on 401k + pension alone. The average doesn't even earn that in a year.

Since y'all bring this thread up, I've been thinking of getting a license in home inspection. My parents paid a dude $375 cash for him to go throughout their house. shyt you do 2 houses a day, 4 days a week, that's a lot of money:win: And thats not talking about bigger houses

I can see myself being a home inspector as a side hustle. IDK why I like that particular career, but I'm a construction guru

This is what I've (basically) been doing. shyt is mostly cake, but you do NOT want to go overboard. 2 homes/day = 8+ hours and you will go into parts of a home not even the people living in it know exist. I've gotten to a point where I can look at a house and tell what's wrong with it in about 20 minutes without even talking to the owners. I still do the full battery of testing to verify my suspicions and justify how much they pay me and that's going to be the bulk of your time. I feel like a detective trying to solve a mystery and, in some cases, like an EMT saving someone's life.

I do more commercial/multifamily units nowadays, but the feelings (and tests) are the same.

And the tips...........:banderas:

Haven't touched my bank accounts or credit cards in MONTHS. I've paid rent from tips alone more than a few times.

Depends who you work for. When I was working for the non-profit, I barely cleared $30k/yr. Dudes working for utility companies made twice that. I stuck with it for about 11 years, then went to an HVAC contractor and since they were doing commercial buildings, they paid for more certs. If you do nothing but single-family units, you're not going to make much. I do single-family, multi-family, mobile homes, and commercial buildings so I get paid a salary from my job, but, I also can (and do) charge consultation/assessment fees to other contractors who lack certified personnel on-staff but require the evaluations I perform as part of their contractual obligations for jobs they bid on.

I just told my stepdaddy last night that if i don't last at Amazon i might try a trade.
Only thing is i aint got no money for all that.
(Im in htown too)
I haven't looked into it in a while but some trade schools are offering to pay your way. Obvious downside being that you'd have to move.
