This is where I thing age plays an important role in perception and expectations.

As a dude in his 20's, there's no way I'd ever expect Yatchy to go gold first week no matter what commercials he's in.

Kendrick and Cole are out here going gold first week and I would never put him on their level.

Hell Yatchy himself would never expect to go gold first week.

He's a novelty act

Not to mention the Target commercial you bringing up was from last year and was out months before his first album.

In my opinion, a second album selling higher than a first album with less promotion and no big single roll out by almost double is not a flop

:whoa:

Now hold on a second breh. I don't mean go gold first week. I mean at 70k first week, unless he consistently does 70k week after week, he won't hit gold ever. His first album came out a year ago and never went gold.

Rap albums tend to be front loaded sales wise meaning he obviously won't do 70k consistently, either.

His first album did 46k. This album did 70k. That's only a 24,000 difference. What would've been a flop to you? I'm curious.

Kids, I assume.

The problem with hip-hop is we tend to look at first week sales but if he fails to go gold (like his first album) then it's kind of a moot point.

He could go gold though, who knows? :manny: But artists have hit the 100k range first week and struggled to go gold, so I dunno.

When should a rapper, in your opinion, reach gold or else his career is a flop? The second album?

And why are you putting so much emphasis on record labels wanting their artist to go gold?

I don't think QC looks at an artist like Yatchy and makes that their goal. Their goal is to market him and his

And I'd say anything less than the first week sales of his debut album would've been a flop seeing as Yacthy has been on a steady decline ever since that album.

A debut album that consisted of heavy promotion and a big single roll out.

None of which his sophomore album did.

Rappers, outside of a few exceptions, tend to trend downward. Popularity-wise.

If he can't go gold on his 1st or 2nd album....do you really expect him to go gold on his 3rd, 4th, or 5th?

And I'm not talking about record label expectations. Gold is the lowest possible certification from the RIAA....if you can't hit gold as an artist, why are you on a major label? There's literally hundreds of indie artists that never go gold.

See this old head for reference, he thinks cds is the only way a rapper can generate revenue for a label like it's the 80s when he was young. That's why they always compare shyt with shyt from ages ago as if the market dynamics, business models and everything just stopped evolving when they first heard about those things :snoop:

I highly doubt record labels are out here saying
"He goes gold by his 2nd or he's a flop".

Not in 2018.

By that logic Tekashi has to sell 440,000(debuted around 60k) his next album or he's a flop?

This is the era of cash grabs and novelty acts.

Put out an album to have his face out there again and get more endorsement deals.

Hell all of his deals with Target, Nautica and Sprite were done before his debut album.

Largely due to the success of Bank Account which caught on and went double platinum. It's possibly Yachty has a Bank Account type record on this album (idk I haven't heard it) but so far Yachty hasn't been able to bang out a successful solo single
