You wonder about things like this though, I mean clearly things went awry at some point…financially secure/responsible people do not have to declare bankruptcy to clear debts, they simply pay what they owe, or don't accumulate a million dollars in debt…..I'm not saying this isn't just a tactic, we have all seen this play out in the courts because of child support filings and claims, whatever…but something isn't right with that situation, he overextended himself, or made bad investments, or bad decisions with who handled his money…This is not simply 'rich man' debt reduction tactics, it's a semi rich man trying to squirm out of a bad finical situation he created….

nikka ain't broke. trust me. people file for bankruptcy to protect assets and clear debts. he CLAIMED 67k in assets. that doesn't mean that that was all he had. best believe he got doe in the stash. he's just trying to get the creditors and IRS off his back. it's a common move by rich people...

yeah, he does owe money. and bankruptcy will clear that. then, when it's all said and done, he can keep what he has and move on. that's when he can tap those offshore accounts and continue being rich.

It's amazing how people still don't know the tricks of rich people.

Mekhi Phifer appears to have gotten into some money trouble.

Phifer, who's best known for his role as a doctor on ER, filed for bankruptcy on April 22 in California, according to legal documents obtained by E! News.

The Chapter 7 request states Phifer has $67,701 in assets, including $7,000 in household furniture; two 9mm handguns valued at $800; and a 2003 Range Rover.

But the 39-year-old faces $1,268,783 in debts and claims against him including child support, and back taxes owed to the state of California and the IRS.

The documents show Phifer earns $7,500 a month, but he has around $11,600 in monthly expenses.

In addition to co-starring on ER, Phifer had a role opposite Eminem in 8 Mile, and he appeared on the television series House of Lies and Torchwood.

Someone call a doctor ... because former "ER" star Mekhi Phifer is broke as hell.

Phifer filed for full blown bankruptcy late last month, claiming roughly $67,000 in assets ... as he drowns in debt totaling around $1.3 Mil.

Maybe he should have seen it coming. Phifer says in his legal docs -- obtained by TMZ -- he spends around $11,600 in monthly expenses, but pulls in only $7,500.

His debts are impressive ... $1.2 mil in back taxes, $50K in lawyers bills and $4,500 in back child support.

The silver lining ... Mekhi's small list of assets is pretty sweet -- including a LEATHER BED, a 12-year-old Segway (valued at $1,500), and a surprisingly large collection of firearms (1 shotgun and 2 9mm pistols).
