It lasted/is lasting longer than I thought it would, honestly. I never thought it'd be one of the all-time verses, but it will definitely be one of those time capsule verses where people connect the verse with a moment that spurred things to happen outside of it (even if all of those things that happened aren't very big). I viewed it more as a challenge as a diss. It isn't like he was saying personal or specific things about these dudes; he simply said he's trying to outdo them and raise the standard in hip-hop. When I compare that to the REAL disses of the past, I don't see it as a diss.

The New York shyt was a quoted kurupt line and he didn't tell them to step their skills up. He said he got love for them but he tryna be so much better than them that their fans will only wanna hear him. No where did he say y'all need 2 step it up

It was definitely a quoted Kurupt line,but he kept going - "I'm Makaveli's offspring, I'm the king of New York, king of the coast, one hand I juggle them both." He went further than Kurupt's line; the "King of NY" line sounded intentional to me.

He also said "I'm trying to raise the bar high, who wants to jump and get it?" That's saying to step up to the standard that he's setting. That's pretty clear to me, too.
