I think the problem is too many gamers were used to a consistent tempo of massive AAA games...Think Zelda, God of War, Halo ,etc.
Look at how many of the games highlighted are smaller indie games..Great to you and I but they're not really marquee events..hell they've got Final Fantasy Tactics on here like this Ivalice Collection isn't it's third re-release.
I don't this gen is trash or it sucks or anything, but the library of huge AAA games is objectively smaller than any previous generation, and that comes down to increased dev times+cost. Not getting around it.
Well, we're 5 years into this gen. Let's look 5 years into the PS4/Xbox One generation, which was 2018. We had:Well yeah, games take longer to make but even still…. You got a new Silent Hill game. Ghost of Yotei, Monster Hunter, a new Doom, Borderlands, Kojima, a big nintendo game, Mario Kart, Assassins Creed, a new Ninja Gaiden, etc.
How is that any different than any other generation? Thats a pretty decent year in AAA gaming, whats really missing?

God of War
Red Dead 2
Smash Ultimate
Forza 4
Bayonetta 2
Monster Hunter World
Spider-Man
Far Cry 5
Assassins Creed Odyssey
Dragonball FighterZ
That's just a more stacked lineup with more of AAA luster, pound-for-pound.
Been trying to find the words but this nailed it.I think the problem is too many gamers were used to a consistent tempo of massive AAA games...Think Zelda, God of War, Halo ,etc.

I was strictly comparing 2018 vs 2025 releases; both years were 5 years into a respective console gen. You’re moving the goal post.Like what are we doing here lol…i could list 20 more AAA games off the top of the head that rival last gen

If we really want a table comparing the PS4/XOne/Switch libraries to the PS5/XSX/Switch 2 libraries, you know the last generation is going to have the more robust catalogue… and with these extremely long development times established as the new norm that’s not going to change.
Tbh at least the PS5 was backward compatible with PS4 games. PS5 was my first Sony console, and I've been having a good time with it. Backlog still feels endless. Imagine if PS4 or Xbox One was someone's first console. If one's first console was a PS4 or Xbox one it would feel rougher, imo. This Gen has been fine if you just look at it as 8th Gen with the expansion pak.
Exactly. Most of the games i play many people have no idea they exist or would ever play them. I have never once felt that there is a lack of games because i do not only play COD, Madden, 2K, FIFA and a handful of other games.I think the problem is too many gamers were used to a consistent tempo of massive AAA games...Think Zelda, God of War, Halo ,etc.
