The zip drive's reign was so short because it was basically a bigger floppy disk, and very few PCs had the drive built in. Add in the fact that CD-RWs were more portable, and USB was being improved every year....zip got theface and was viewed as holmesian after a while.....I mean just look at it:

My cousin had a parallel port zip drive when we were in college. I remember lugging that thing back and forth from the Physics computer lab to download newsgroup porn.
