I hear you.
I need to listen to black messiah and voodoo again tbh .. I was disappointed with black messiah! Maybe it will sound better this time around ..
I personally think most people wanted D to remake Brown Sugar and Voodoo, and were disappointed that he went in a different direction. Also, I believe that nostalgia plays a huge role too. I honestly loved that Black Messiah showed another side to his artistry and was different sonically from his previous two album. I think that it will be appreciated more as time passes. There are many reasons why I believe in Black Messiah so much, I could go on and on. But that’s just my perspective on things. I just think it’s an underrated album.

Nostalgia definitely influences all of our opinions. I’ll lisen to black messiah and post back

Voodoo's highs are unparalleled. But i think Brown Sugar is all through classic. Although being much shorter helps too.

One Mo'Gin/The Root/Spanish Joint run is otherworldly sh*t ... those are some of the highest highs I've ever listened to, truly incredible sequencing...

But I can agree with this. I have no favourite album.

D'Angelo's whole, bare soul is in Voodoo... he put some deep personal sh*t in there that still vibrates within me.

And Brown Sugar is pure heartwarming love. That album is just love man. From Alright to Sh*t, Damn, Motherf*cker to Higher, everything vibrates love. He sung a lot more velvety on Brown Sugar whereas Voodoo is just dirtier, raw.

There's a certain warmth throughout Brown Sugar though that just holds me dear man.

His passing is such a shock. I felt the same way about D’Angelo’s manager, Dominique Trenier when he passed. Roy has been apart of some of my favorite albums so this definitely hits home for me. Dude was very talented. You’re lucky and fortunate to have gotten the chance to see him play live.

Got into Roy when my jazz combo in college played the joint and I'll stay...

RIP

Btw none of these other r&b cats have anywhere close to the chops D does playing with these jazz musicians so naturally... The recording process for voodoo was just D jamming classic standards with people like pino palladino, just fooling around and then putting down the best ideas. D'Angelo could make any type of music that he wants to at the very highest level, none of his contemporaries are close to that

Best video on YouTube. This Spanish Joint may even trump the studio AND acoustic version, this is probably my single most listened to piece of music in the last couple years.

Perfect arrangement ... D at home on the CP80, Chris Dave playing completely possessed, the seamless transitions throughout, the Vanguard on backing vocals... live horns... Pino Palladino in another world... Isaiah's solo & Jesse motherfukking Johnson floating everywhere else.

Musical nirvana right here... spirit ascending vibrations...

Literally just set my Sunday morning off on a good note. Love both of these joints. and his music is seamless as he transitions from new to old. All timeless. Dap + Rep
