His last album was a slow burner with no real promotion either.
I'm guessing the label had faith enough that they believed he'd be able to carry another album in the same fashion.
Problem is, aside from "Get You" and "Best Part", "Blessed" was a minor hit based off of (from what I noticed, predominantly black) couples latching on to it. There was even a small trend of people proposing at his shows when he performed the song, if I remember correctly.
When you turn around and say you don't care if black people fukk with your music, you can go ahead and forget about any type of success like that.
