And what valuable skills would he be learning that could be prepare him to move to something better? Dude would literally still be scrapping by and in the same situation with less money in his pocket.
Maybe I wasn’t clear. I agree that taking the unemployment now is a better move since they added the extra 600 per week. People can stay home and possibly learn a skill online. But five months ago, I would’ve told him to take the job at Amazon. I don’t think he would have had much of a choice.

Look I haven't been laid off and luckily have a job where I have plenty of job security for now (knock on wood).

But I would never tell some laid off kat to go risk their life (potentially catching a virus) working some physical labor, no insurance job barely collecting 17 an hour. If they can stay at home for 3 to 4 months making more from unemployment.

Genuinely curious, what should be the alternative in this time?

Personally, I'd advise the same thing. If you can easily find work now, then do it to the ability you can (won't get sick, injured etc). Control what you can now, then worry about what you can't control later.

I think we all agree the current system needs tweaks and there can be better administration of UE benefits, but I could never advise my sibling to just sit at home collecting checks if they can easily find work. The longer you stay unemployed, the tougher it is to get back into the labor force.

I feel you. See a kat like me when I was younger would have taken the unemployment and then figured how to make money under the table at the same time....:dead:.

But as a youngster I was always a hustler and habitual capitalistic line stepper...:dead:

Why do you get income?

If working won't provide more than you would get to stay at home, your time would be better spent getting money to stay at home and planning out your actions.

And I understand your mindset. I feel the same way. It is something I am trying to remove.

Because life isn't free, unfortunately, but income combined with training/education/experience is typically higher than without and if you're going to work, you may as yield the highest rate you can. And this is just my opinion for this situation, not really my overall "mindset". Just found your comment interesting.

A lot of nikkas SWEAR by Dave Ramsey though. And let's be real, if this was say, five months ago, you all would agree with him because I saw the exact same advice given here before. Y'all used to love promoting those sorry ass, exploitative gig economy jobs.
The rise & grind nikkas on here are the worst:mjlol:

they been awfully quiet the last few weeks.:russell:

As a poor person who has received both government assistance and unemployment, working has way more "freedom" than getting assistance. Having a cap on the amount of money you can make, sucks ass. I remember a couple years back having to redetermine for food stamp eligibility, I was borrowing money from family to pay what's necessary, and they wanted to know the names and numbers of people I was borrowing the money from. I told them I was selling ass on craigslist and didn't know the people's names :heh: Unemployment is a weekly hassle as well. It's not worth it, unless of course you're bringing in more than your salary.

If you make less than 50k you’re making more on unemployment dusting the pandemic

of course the people who have to pay the unemployment don't want you taking it.

but fukk them, do whats in your best interest. Because they would, despite what they say.

people don’t pay unemployment taxes, companies do

He gives the worst advice

i use to listen his podcast daily for like over a year a decade ago and that shyt is repetitive as fukk. he was always advising people to deliver pizza as a side hustle. i remember when dude put his foot in his mouth and told some lady she left her husband to "shack up" with another dude when in fact her husband had died. he quickly apologized when she corrected him but this dude is out of touch.

That's a fair point. I'm looking at this current recession/depression with the mindset that a bird in the hand is worth more than two in the bush. 3 months from now a warehouse job at Amazon might be like a tech job at Google.

And he'll have to be laser sharp during his 6 month break. Even some IT jobs are getting hit right now. The longer this spreads, the more companies will pull back on their expenses (aka hirings).

It’s still a better chance and opportunity to better his life rather being stuck where he is now. I’m curious as to how old the dude is.
