Decline in rap quality is correlated to literacy. These rappers now don't read books, don't write, illiterate. No longer intense path b/w poetry to rap

But this doesn't really hold up because the best rappers were gangster rappers back in the day.

Hell, Glasses is pretty articulate as well especially compared to a lot of popular rappers nowadays.

Big Sean and even Joey Badass can’t push drug rap so it’s all swag and flows and insight. But it’s limited in its appeal because the bigger themes are harder to tackle.

Let’s be real. Everyone likes a little danger in their music.

I remember Big Pun saying he wrote for like 2/3 years before he even went in the booth to record. Its like those sushi chefs who have to only make rice for years before they can progress to the next level. A lot of the newer rappers just dont have that same respect for the craft. Still plenty of good underground artists out there though

Big Sean was one of the biggest artist in Hip-Hop 5-7 years ago. He had a solid commercial run from 2011/12-2020. That's longer than the average rap career. Big Sean's content isn't the problem. He's just ran his course as a top artist. It happens to the vast majority of artist. School Boy Q is a gangster rapper who's having similar if not the same relevancy issues and he's a gangster rapper. Joey Badass was never that big of an artist and the 5 year break he took between albums didn't help either.

All I’m saying is THEMATICALLY, you can only either become Lupe Fiasco…or Jay-Z. You have to max out in either category.

Theres no real lane for a suburban rapper. Drake is surviving. J Cole is treading water. Wale kinda might go full afrobeats if his next project doesn’t knock it out of the park, etc.

I’m not taking away from anyone’s talent level. I’m talking about how the music is received and categorized.

Also record sales not being a way to make money in music has turned rap into commercials for big corporations.

These rappers make more endorsing McDonald’s and Nike. The music is secondary. It’s t all about their brand and how they can be marketed.

Thats why all the music sounds the same. Do what’s popular don’t go outside the norm and you will appeal to the consumer(that type I posted above)

Those kids don’t care about the art of it just what is the next hyped thing they can buy and post about.

Thats the problem. All “vibes.” Music is so trash now because of that mindset.

These modern day R&B chicks dont write in a manner that leaves a lot to the imagination or is creative. This aint Jill Scott or Badu creatives. Its blunt & to the point empty. No woven words into beautiful poetry or meaning.

Im a HUGE female R&B fan more than male R&B & what they are writing today is trash
Music has never ever been anything other than vibes. grow up

Grow up? Not my fault you don't have respect for the architecture that is the written word in music.

That’s a you issue. Any and every excuse for the crass and uncreative word play in music today. Barely heartfelt or vulnerable. Just lazy Im getting mines or junk verses that require little or no thought.

Music is entrainment. Not a math problem

Double entendres are corny. Vibes are not only forever but they don’t lie

I agree it started with my generation but these dudes don’t have the vocabulary to spit crazy if they wanted to. Even somebody like G Herbo who I like is an idiot. I can only imagine if he actually read or watched docs and stuff .
