Although I do agree that Rick Rubin is a genius when it comes to production
Business wise...he falls short...that's where Lyor Cohen comes in..although he is the DEVIL PERSONIFIED. .Lyor is adept at having the insight to create revenue streams and longevity for artists in regards to branding and tapping into movements
As Hustle Simmons said LYOR SAVED DEF JAM
Lyor is a great businessman, I really don't view Rubin as a businessman. Lyor is a snake but...so is nearly everyone in the music industry. You're rarely gonna find honest guys like Steve Rifkind or No I.D. in music.
That's my problem with Dame's racial bullshyt. Your color doesn't stop you from stealing from the next man. It didn't stop Diddy from fleecing Biggie while smiling in his face. It didn't stop LA Reid from signing TLC to a poverty deal. Didn't stop Irv Gotti from caking off Ashanti. You gotta understand that the people who make their way to the top do so by hustling. It's all a game, and everyone plays it. Just watch in a few years Meek and Wale will be dissing Ross for stealing from them.
The realest shyt I heard a record label associate say is that he loved the game because he likes hustling hustlers. This dude (white) noted that so many rappers claim to be master hustlers, yet it's easy as fukk to hook them with an advance and paperwork they don't even read. Or if they read it, they hire a lawyer down the street from the label, a lawyer who is friends with someone at the label and thus willing to steer the artist into a bad or semi-bad contract.
