Truthurts.com :lawd:

Yeah a lot of these YOUNG FOLKS on here have no recollection or knowledge of DEF JAM during those early years from its start in the early 80s

ART Barr might remember the black and grey colored 12 inch vinyls with the turntable logo :ohlawd:

See DEF JAM started out as a ARTSY FARTSY HIPSTER DOWNTOWN MANHATTEN BRAND.....

Which explains its dabbling into rock and punk culture from its inception with groups like Slayer and the Beastie Boys

Rick Rubin being a MANHATTEN college student linked up with Russell Simmons a club promoter via thier mutual artistry Druggie friends whom were into film..art and cutting edge music of NYC (punk and rap)

In fact DEF JAM got DISSED by the other REAL BLACK OWNED STREET LABELS AND MOVEMENTS such as COLD CHILLIN RECORDS home of SHAN..G. Rap and the Juice Crew

As well as Pop Art Records outta Philly home of the Hilltop Hustlas I.e Steady B. Cool C...etc

I remember Mr. Magic of WBLS and a COLD CHLILLIN affiliate throwing darts at DEF JAM and RUSH for being "hollywood"...

Because it was obvious DEF JAM had deejay on the "payroll" such as Chuck Chill Out and various staff members at 98.7 kiss the rival of WBLS...one of the first instances of PAYOLA IN HIP HOP...

SO U SEE WHERE FUNKMASTER FLEX gets his INFLUENCE from and why he went hard DEFENDING DEF JAM exec Joey I.E Manda

Dougie Fresh and the get fresh crew took shots as well even at RUN DMC because of Rush/DEF JAM cutting out other movements or snatching up TALENT cause of thier long corporate bread and MAFIA backing ...see MICHAEL FRANCEZE :obama:

Simply cause THEY DIDNT REPRESENT THE STREETS..

..and had a BIG TIME DISTRIBUTION DEAL WITHIN A YEAR OF JUST OPENING SHOP at RICK RUBIN NYU DORM

ONLY OTHER EARLY NYC "RAP BRAND" that could compete with them at that time was SUGAR HILL RECORDS and they were SICIALIAN MAFIA OWNED anyway courtesy of MCA RECORDS and MORRIS LEVY

So they had Corporate Money from the jump and already had movie deals on the table like Krush Groove courtesy of Russell's and Rick socialite friends who were plugged in with Hollywood and Jew connects...which also explains LYOR COHEN feeling so comfortable enough to Finesse the label right out of Russell's hands and force Rick Rubin to run away..

Cause Lyor was really about the $$$..and Russell was head over heels in debt :snoop:

Which is why it's not surprising when Russell says NOTHING NEGATIVE about LYOR cause in his own words LYOR saved him

In spite of the fact LYOR was robbing the company of its equity and sovereignty ..

So by the time the new millennium (2000) was coming in...Russ only was left with 35% stake in the company...HE HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO TAKE THAT 100 million DOLLAR buyout in 1999
1999 from UNIVERSAL

Which leads u to the picture u have now...

The illusion of a street movement which was nothing more than a urban spot with black shopkeepers I.e (Russell...Jay-z..No ID..Shakir...LA Reid) OWNED BY WHITE CORPORATE OVERSEERS

So sorry kiddies DEF JAM has NEVER been about the culture of hip hop from the streets

excellent bro, same story as in :takedat: also?

No wonder Simmons was so happy to say Cash Money is a truly black owned record label

I'm not surprised , Blacks need to own their own music and run labels. Stop running to these kinds to support you. All they gonna do is rob your resources from playing the professional money sport called "Capitalism"

shyt, man:huhldup:.......

:dead:

I could imagine everything on the surface being ironclad, but all the 'affiliations' running the show behind closed doors would've been a BET American Gangster ep in the making.

Dame and his hustling ass Harlemite's, Irv and his street fellas from Queens, Suge and them crazy ass Piru nikkas with Smooth ass JPrince and his goonies :russ: your right that shyt would of been epic :ohhh:

We sell everything that we create and own. We have nothing to show our future generations but mere emotional memories of what once was.

OAN,
That power group from Suge, Irv and JPrince could've been dope.

:what:

News flash for you dummies, a white man created Def Jam (Rick Rubin). More Breaking News.....Def Jams first ever release was a track for a punk rock band named Hose. Lyor Cohen and Julie Greenwald, both "cacs", were two of the earliest execs there. If it weren't for these "culture vultures", you clowns wouldn't have heard of LL Cool J, Public Enemy, EPMD, Onyx, etc.
I know you're white and offended by this thread but no way in hell should a hip hop label have 90% white people as the heads. fukk that.

I'm not discrediting Russells accomplishments but had DJ Jazzy Jay not introduce the two of them, Russell would not have been a part of Def Jam. So in Rick being the creator, yes he put Russell onto Def Jam. And LL Cool J mailed his demo to tons of labels in NYC, Def Jam happened to scoop him up. Don't make it seem that Russell plucked James Todd Smith out of obscurity.
And if it wasn't for Russ, how the fukk do you know that Def Jam would have took off? :mindblown: What did they have going on before Russ???

what can be done to change this?

well, a good start would be having all the over 40s rappers acting like kids trying to stay relevant by bullshyting on vladtv etc to grow up and try to take control of the culture, the 30s rappers should stop worrying more about their street cred which lends them in jails and start preparing for a better future..rappers under 30 should revisit their history, respect the job done by elders and try to improve the community as a whole.

its never gon happen coz the community as a whole supports distructive behaviour..those that make uplifting music never sell records compared to those that rap about black on black violence n drugs.

That pic is heartbreaking. This is who pushes buttons for our culture? It sounds like it!
