Garland(as a city) fell off so hard man. As did Mesquite.
It's really sad.

@rantanamo - was there a bball coach Chris Johnson @ Garland when you went there?

there was a football coach Chris Johnson that worked with the freshmen. I think he was in his first or second year when I graduated.

Yeah, Westerberg was our offensive coordinator. He went to Allen when coach Martin left Garland for Allen. Our D coordinator was coach Jordan. Did you play with Malcolm Williams when Garland had Cedar Hill beat in that semi-final?

As far Garland falling off, I have mixed feelings about that. Garland was never a wealthy place. Mostly working class whites, blacks and hispanics when I was growing up. The northern part is nicer than its ever been. The Eastside is about where its always been, but there are a lot more new houses. South Garland is about what its been. . Things were at their worse with crack in the late 80s/early 90s. There are a lot more hispanics now, but its safer and schools aren't bad. Mesquite is just different. Hell, I will say nicer. Used to be redneck as hell with a small nice area north of I-30. Now the East and south sides are filled with new houses with a lot of middle class black folks and they've kept the Town East area decent. Huge improvement from that cornfed, redneck, pulpwood hauling, big tire pickup truck place it used to be. These places get a bad rap because places like Frisco, Flower Mound, Southlake are so upper class, but these other places aren't bad places to live.

I don't think any football program in the area fell off harder than garland and north mesquite.

Garland is still making the playoffs regularly. Just hard to compete when these wealthy districts can move kids in and send all of their kids to good football camps. What about Carter, Kimball, Plano? John Tyler?

Good point. I forgot about Carter. Suburbs killed them. They still put a lickin' on all schools in the Grove tho. :snoop: JTT still has talent they just don't have a system to succeed. Plano's demographics have changed a lot which has hurt them in football. Student body is very asian. They just realigned their feeder schools and they got the best school in the area for athletics so they may have a resurgence soon.

But Garland used to be monsters. Not only with playoff success, but just by the style of play. They were always bigger and more physical than everybody else.

Yeah, I hate the switch from power football. I loved that Garland held onto it so long. Hope Charlie is successful at UT so some of these teams will copy and go back to power football.

Yeah, we were in the same senior class.

This! I used to discuss this all the time with couple of teammates when were Seniors. Of course back than I was too young to under the politics & etc. involved. The TV show "Friday Night Lights" really open my eyes to this shyt.

:heh:When I was senior I always wondered WTF were we doing running Power-running offense with regular-ass sized dudes playing OL, compared to the beast-sized OL at a school like Euless Trinity.

Anyways I definitely I prefer a Multiple or Pro-style offense, so I'm glad that's what Charlie Strong want to be at UT.:whew:

Mack Brown definitely had the right-idea to go Multiple or Pro-style after the 2009 season, but UT didn't have the personnel on offense to go All-in in 2010, they need to ease into it as they recruited the personnel. UT finally had the personnel last-season, but Bryan Harsin leaving to take a Head Coaching job & Mack's soft-ass flip-flopping on the style play on Offense stopped UT from reaching their potential.

:ohhh: Speaking of Pleasant Grove, I always wondered how Skyline High School with a population of over 5,000 students wasn't a better program.

Ok, that's probably the same coach Johnson I knew. He ended up being the head bball coach, but probably had to start out doing freshman football. Sounds like you're a few years older than me.

I went to South. Only great player we ever had was Quincy Morgan, and he was a senior when I was coming in as a freshman.

I dunno man, I disagree about Mesquite/Garland. Town East Mall at one point, was considered the best mall in Dallas. People came to Mesquite for Town East. It was more popular than the Galleria. that whole area around there now has gone down, people get robbed/beat up INSIDE the mall.
The houses over there have gone down, the demographic has changed for sure. It's mostly Hispanic as all the white ppl moved to Rockwall, Forney, Sunnyvale. The nicer areas on Galloway aren't such anymore.

And when I went to South it was predominantly white school, a few of us blacks, and Hispanics were growing in # at that time. Now it's totally flip flopped from what I hear. I considered alot of the white kids I went to school with to be wealthy. Not Plano(at the time) wealthy, but they had nice vehicles, nicer houses over by Country Club area.

To me, the nice parts of Garland now are way out by Firewheel, George Bush Tollway and going out towards Sacshe....and a few areas over by Lakeview.

But Dallas in general changed to me during the time I was away in college:manny:

Yeah, they definitely had all the biggest & roughest players. All the kids who were good in middle school football went to Garland

What was the other Tyler school that was always good?

Quincy and I were in the same class. He used to have us shook watching film. He would take those short slants to the house.

My dad was like morally opposed to South for us to go to because of how it was in the 80s. They were still flying those stars and bars and had that Confederate Colonel when my sister was in high school. Cars would show up to games flying Confederate Flags. I can remember when the UIL made them take it down and yall went with some swords. I'm sure its cool now, but that was a little weird back then. People were pissed and trying to fight the confederate flag removal. That's the Garland I remember as a kid.

Country Club area is still pretty much the same, just more hispanic and black people.. Same income levels though. Those people were never rich, just better off than we were on the East side. The East side is still the same, just more hispanic and the gangs and drugs are gone. Agree on Firewheel. The biggest difference in Garland is that whites have mostly moved to Rowlett or North Garland if they are still there. Incomes are still the same, just more Asians, blacks and hispanics. That's why it has that perception now, which is a little :mjpls:considering there's a lot less crime now.

Yeah, Town East has gone down some, but I think that's because Northpark has grown and Firewheel was built. Mall is still fine. The area around it is still well maintained and stores are still full. But again, Mesquite was never that nice of a place. It was basically a giant Balch Springs back then. Now they have a large population of middle class black people that mostly end up at Horn or Mesquite High. I think its a huge improvement from the redneck place it used to be. Different color, but higher income now.

In the interview I think the woman holding the baby was the parent and the one talking was the translator. The parent can't speak English and the translator is unintelligible. Neither one of them is qualified to pick a charter school.

I'm surprised Deion kept the school going. It will probably limp along for another year or two then get shut down.
