I'll take this one, Newzz.

I've never once heard Thugger on the radio outside of "About the Money". I happened to see a post regaling his melodic talents and penchant for rhythm on the Coli one slow Friday afternoon and took it upon myself to listen to a few tracks on the video site YouTube.

I came across the song "Best Friend" and was fascinated by the rhythmic mastery Thugger exhibited in every aspect of the track: the verse, the hook, even the adlibs (the perfectly modulated vibrato on one of the "scrrrrrr"s captured my attention in a way no other musical moment has in years). That, combined with the esoteric visuals and dance moves clearly delineated from the traditional Sabar dance of the Senegalese, had me fascinated. Thugger was so effortlessly creating a distinctly AFRICAN American aesthetic rhythmically, melodically, and visually. Truly a masterclass performance.

Then, once I looked into the lyrics and saw themes of rugged independence, self-belief, and familial consciousness-- I could never go back to judging Thugger's work through the narrow lens I did before. I suddenly "got it". I started to do a close listening of the rest of his discography and felt foolish for having thereto precluded myself from recognizing the sonic savant.
Dude this is real talk!!!

Exactly how I feel about Thugger's music!

He performs magic on tracks.

Lyrically he finds and channels pockets in beats through flows and rides each beat pattern as if it were it's own beat. He'll go from singing, to yelling, to rapping, to harmonizing, to flowing sometimes in second short burts that leave you breathless.

No trolling. Once you hear a track of his, at first it won't grab you...but then he will switch up his flow so radically it makes you pay attention to what he's doing. Next thing you know you're digging the song and want to hear more.

This man has an amazing work ethic too. A true talent. A breath of fresh air. A genius.

THis is why I can't agree with anybody who says this dude is a terrible rapper.

I mean I'm a huge hip-hop head and have appreciation for all sorts of music...but only Young Thug leaves me with that feeling after listening to his tracks of "how is he doing this?"

He must have a perspective and understanding of lyricism, of poetry, of music, of beats, of flows, of everything far beyond the maintanable reach of any rapper out right now.

People are trying to emulate his style lyrically, but they fall flat.

Let me tell you something. Back in the day, you want to hear how the godfather of rock and R&B Little Richard got famous?

BEcause, he made product so quick, so fast, so powerful and so potent that you had to listen to little richard to get it, you couldn't listen to anybody else, you had to listen to him.

The beat is the game and thug is just playing the game.

TEchnically, he's miles ahead of many rappers.

32 year olds aren't supposed to be listening to hip hop. You're stuck in your high school phase. You're supposed to mature and grow out of this stuff.

Edit: Young Thug getting near-universal praise in here is fukking strange. Are you guys retarded? Or maybe it's just white people (pretending to be black) who likes him.

I'm 32 and once you stop smoking weed and ingesting chemical depressants, trust me, you'll drop 98% of hip hop like a fukking rock. It's like having a spell lifted off you.

Hip hop is a byproduct of the crack era, and now that the crack era is gone, this shyt has jumped the shark.

Maybe you digest it differently but Good Music is Good Music at the end of the day. It might not be your cup of tea or even mine's on the regular but Thugga do his thing.

If you understand the game then you understand the struggle. If society consumed Entertainment the way we used to and Social Media Marketing wasn't so relevant then you'd probably be a fan as well. You wouldn't have the space to deny him.
