That's an assumption right there thats dangerous in its self. Because people didn't agree with you they are ignorant or have never left the country? That's silly. I didn't call you ignorant, i just said you had your head up your ass, there is a difference. But that's a "let me look like i'm taking the high road, but still shyt on people" kind of response.

And you STILL refuse to place ANY onus on this reporter. Its clear YOU aren't looking beyond your own view and considering why people would assume the question is offensive in the first place. I would be offended if he asked this to ANY athlete. Its dumb.

why would I place this on a nobody reporter, he asked a supplemental off cuff question regarding USA next opponent. Yeah, it's not basketball related but hell this is the international stage, so expect questions about have you been here, have you tried Turkish food, do travel etc etc. The onus is on the one who is representing his country, not some random reporter.

Also, your first sentence is useless. People are calling me a CAC and bytch, etc etc just because I didn't side with them and protecting the jump circle - so of course I'm going to question there ignorance and the fact that they believe people around the world aren't taught about the US. I'm not taking the high road, I'm speaking from experience and giving out my unadulterated opinion - no high road involved as witness by the 20 negs I've received.

1. so you speak multiple languages? because most of the interviews (non us) haven't been in English, I watch these games and they aren't usually in English. I don't want to debate this because the majority of the countries are European, so it wouldn't be as relevant.

2. fine could be a stupid question, who knows the reports intent. I'm not going to focus on that, the response needed to be better. The reporter is a nobody, he will go about his business with his name in the headlines now. You depower these type of people by not fueling the fire. That's the art of PR, but again most of you have no idea about this nor sports psychology as witness by the OU superstar in this thread. And it's fine, but you're trying to argue me down about it and have no idea.

3. And cousins fell victim to it. The question was imbecilic and it wasn't without some merit, he could have been playing the "David vs Goliath" angle - either way Cousins fell victim to an even larger stereotype "the ignorant American"

2. The response didnt "need to be better". For what? Stop being so politically correct. These reporters should be hounding the Spanish team for mocking all asians more, no? There is a lot of anti-American sentiment due to an inferiority complex around the world. A good portion of that sentiment is also due to our political/economic power and actions but its more ignorant for these reporters and citizens of different countries to try and single out a random American to enforce the stereotype that "americans are stupid" in an individual sense, as if we are truly a reflection of our government and wall st. Go to a random country overseas and ask a farmer or random person where Alabama is and i bet you dont get a correct response..and i also bet said person wont be stereotyped and judged by it

3. get that sterotype shyt out. you and others who choose to see this answer as evidence and justification for "ignorant american" are more victims to the false narrative than cousins is

it was most likely what people are saying: euro trying to play up the ignorant american angle. shyts annoying.

its not a terrible question to ask in general..since yugoslavia broke up not too long ago and some/most dont know about slovenia..but it was obviously baiting and stupid. why didnt they ask coach k that? :skip:

thats what they do in europe to many americans though. they assume most of us are stupid and/or should know a bunch of minute details and think they are intellectually superior because they 1) can speak english even if its not their primary language 2) know some basic geography 3) know some presidents 4) watch our TV programs/sports.
a slovenian chick asked me if most americans are like the ones they see on MTV :wow: Thats far more ignorant and stupid IMO

agreed with this...although if you're feeding people one thing (MTV) what do you expect.

When I traveled throughout Africa, I received the same questions from Morocco to South Africa. I was also serenaded with Lil Wayne and Jayz lyrics amongst others while there. but hell even Europeans mimic American's from what they see on TV, had a German chic sounding exactly like Iggy's southern accent. I was like how the fukk do you have an ATL accent.

now, you're trying to combat me with ad hominem attacks. Instead of just pointing out that Demarcus is a US representative and does need to be politically correct. It's a bad look for him to be up there doing that.

no one applauded Spain for mocking Asians, how is this a relevant response? You guys are applauding Demarcus for this lackluster and stupid response. Like I said, a bit of PR training will fix that and Coach K will take him to the side and let him know what to do next time.

i expect people who are just fed MTV and are interested in how americans really are to do some digging and not use MTV as a basis for all americans. thats absurd. its like us watching videos of ISIS and saying all muslims are extremists interested in beheading everyone

These are two different things. Asking someone did they take in any culture while they traveled and asking if they know where a country is is two different things.

And the onus is on BOTH as they BOTH are supposed to be professionals....but only one of them gets PAID to ask the questions....do you see that im getting at?

im not applauding him. but i dont see anything wrong with it really. could there have been a "better" answer? sure. but he probably got the feeling that he was being attacked and the reporter was trying to bait him into seeming uneducated and stupid so he responded in the same vein by essentially posing the same question to him. on a human to human standpoint its more than fair to say. cousins is a US representative of their BASKETBALL TEAM, not a congressman, diplomat or etc.

have there been questions to and articles written about the spanish team this time around for a far more ignorant and egregious action? that was the whole team, being representatives of Spain, mocking a whole culture. this was cousins responding to a stupid question about geography

no it's not, especially when you're about to play the team. "Do you know where you're opponent is from?" that's basically the question - why the attitude ????

Spain was taken over the coals, issued multiple apologies what are you talking about? stop bringing up insignificant tangents - the question was a legit (if supplemental) question regarding US's next opponent. His answer was stupid, antagonistic, and lacked decorum when he's suppose to be representing the US.

then again, with the ignorance being spouted in this thread maybe he did represent the US well.

It's not a BASIC question. The entirety of the soccer world cup was played this summer and not ONCE did a reporter ask a player where another country was.

1. because its really not all that important in the context of the game being played.
2. because its offensive to assume that someone isn't aware of where a country is...its condescending.

You think they asked any USA players where Ghana was when they played them?
You think they asked anyone where Costa Rica or Honduras was?

No, because those reporters were more professional and classier than that.

they played slovenia in a friendly already. question wasnt asked then. did they ask uros slokar where alabama is?

listen, i get what you are saying. but i can tell you first hand, that most slovenians interested in FIBA arent offended by this whatsoever. ive been there and lived there for almost half a year and am in regular contact with slovenians...one even sent me a picture of varejao in the friendly against brazil in slovenia. they are a basketball loving country and, like i said, the ones interested in this most likely don't give two shyts about this whatsoever.

this is much ado about nothing. just another reason for europeans to get on their intellectual pedestal while also pretty much ignoring the actual intelligence of their own countries, particularly on geography. cousins was preparing to play in the NBA most of his life, as were most players on the team, and only went to college one year. as i asked you before...go ask a random non degree having person in taiwan about geography, whats their knowledge base going to be like? how about a similar person in south africa? how many mexicans in mexico know where slovenia is?

how about this...what percentage of non european players in FIBA could tell you where slovenia is? how many of them were asked? i bet a good amount of them still think yugoslavia is a country. and how many american reporters asked their opponents random questions on american geography?
