I think this is the wrong takeaway from her admission, and overall, it’s not a helpful framing if the goal is to see any real progress from the left in this space. Her thesis at the time actually aligned with how many Americans were feeling—whether people want to admit that or not. It also didn’t help that the so-called Bernie Bros were engaging in “my way or the highway” politics, often alienating potential allies with their rigidity and hostility. She stated that she agreed with Bernies take on capitalism was correct, but his blind spots to race was inexcusable which even I at that time agreed with. To be fair, I think a lot of people learned valuable lessons from that era. Even Kyle acknowledged that the worst Democrat is still better than a Republican, which speaks volumes about how the stakes have shifted. And if you actually listened to the interview, Joy has consistently been on the right side of the Gaza issue. Her stance has been principled and clear, even when others wavered.
