I need
@storyteller to bless us with some analysis
Respect fam! I was the dentist for a marathon of work and in two hours all hell's broken loose. First thing's first, this firing is absolutely justified. Fish has had over a season and a half with the Knicks and let's hit a check list of his issues in that span; Knicks fam this is all review ish, skip the bullet points you know the deal. Just laying some ish out for those who weren't following the situation...
. He struggled with rotations throughout his first year, which coulda been injuries. But this season he was no better, he finally set a rotation to start January when we had a nice little run but it took a single injury for him to blow it to hell and start the inexplicable combinations. In the past two weeks I've seen line-ups with 3 F's, 2 C's...3 G's, a SF and a C...things like that where you can't even tell what he's thinking.
. It was pretty commonly floated that he's a poor X's and O's coach and there were some bad signs on the court. The team routinely went on long dry runs with no TO's, it's among the worst in the league in fourth quarter play and he actually told the press we don't run plays late in games...if the team was doing alright in the fourth, that'd be a throw away but the lack of effectiveness made it a scary statement.
. Not sure if this dude was behind the strict adherence to the triangle or if Phil is...but the team was blatantly better when players were free to run pick and rolls in the offense. Melo's always been great there, KP is a prototypical pick and pop man and RoLo sets great picks/screens. Yet the game plan only utilized the PnR offense when the team was down big amounts.
. Players looked disinterested and disheartened in a lot of recent games. He said he wouldn't be disappointed if we missed the playoffs when we were right in the hunt. Just not a smart soundbyte and an easy way to make players disillusioned after they worked so hard. Could explain the lack of energy lately.
. He was getting into fist fights with Barnes on the opposite end of the country a day before scheduled practice. Tough to demand respect from NBA players when you're getting into fist fights with current players. He also bashed Rondo which just looks unprofessional. Dude is mentally on the same level as the players instead of taking a true mentor attitude.
. Player development was sketchy at best. Multiple players said they weren't sure what Fish wanted from them. Amid being benched over a month into the season, D-Will literally said there had been no communication with Fisher. Seraphin implied the same and bumped O'Quinn out of the rotation by basically just asking Fisher wtf he was expected to do out there. Grant and O'Quinn implied similar confusion. Players regressed under him instead of improving.
. Fish said winning doesn't matter a week after he played an already injured Melo for 50+ minutes to lock up a win against the 6'ers. Melo's knee soreness followed shortly after. Grant lost rotation minutes to Sasha. Early never got reps. Galloway still isn't starting. The young guys should be getting as many reps as possible if winning doesn't matter and Melo (among others) shouldn't be rushed back or pushed to play big minutes while hurt.
I think that covers enough to safely say...this ain't a bad decision (and there's plenty more to speak on). Dude was on shaky ground at best. As far as where the Knicks go from here, Rambis is nobody's choice for a head coach but he's a place holder. It's also an easy excuse for Phil to show up and do more with the players without stepping on anyone's toes. As for who's next? Shaw did terribly in his first shot and it's tough for me to gauge Walton, it'd be hard for a coach to fail in his interim situation. I'd rather have an experienced head coach...But I literally always just want JVG or Hubie Brown back because of pure bias, so there's that. I just want a no nonsense coach in the mix, that'll give players set directions and create an identity for the team. Teams are fast breakers or ranged shooters on the attack, they're physical on defense or they pressure the passing lanes and force TO's...the Knicks don't have anything definitive about them except for a poorly run triangle offense and consistent scoring droughts. I also want a coach who won't back down from Vets. Fish seemed scared to upset the older guys to me.
All that typing done and let me just add that this ish doesn't save the season or anything close to that. Rambis almost definitely isn't the coaching solution and we still need plenty of back court help. I'd like a real PF option off the bench too, just a 10 mpg legitimate PF. Would even settle for picking Lee up off waivers at this point. We can't have KOQ and Seraphin sharing the court when both are C's. So this ain't a big solution, but it's a message to the players and it at least points to the Knicks not sitting idly while the team flounders.
