The thing about athletes speaking up is they have a platform to voice their minds on topics, they have sections of papers, magazines, tv networks all dedicated to them yet they say nothing.
Ali let go of his livelihood, he had no other way to live besides boxing, these new cats have contracts and enough talent to not worry bout being cut, but they're scared of messing up their extra money.
Not everybody is built like Ali or Kareem or Jim Brown, but you have to wonder a little bit as to why the new age is so afraid to speak up when they have more power than ever.

Damn.. Jeter must have told dude to fukk off before...

But jeter isn't the only athlete he can point out... u have jordan, tiger, nba players of today minus a few like d wade with his hoodie for trayvon and derek rose who started the I can't breathe t shirts but don't get credit for...

Players today scared to hurt their brands if they say anything about someone like trump or Hillary... it's the same PR " well espn reporter I really haven't been paying any attention of the situation, because right now I'm just focused on team needs "

Which frankly....is okay to a degree. Many of us wish people would speak up.

HOWEVER....
If you don't speak up, you get to sit back and credit and praise Ali for supposedly paving a road that YOU chose to never even stand on, let alone walk.

It's the NY Daily News

The guy is addressing the biggest NY athlete of the last 30 years

:manny:

Not sure what this is supposed to mean.
Yeah.
So then maybe you look like a dikk talking about all these things that Muhammad Ali taught you, which was the point of the piece.

You guys are here upset that Jeter was singled out. He's the biggest star in NY making a fraudulent tribute and a NY columnist called him out on it.

As far as all the other guys this article could be written about, take it up with Bill Plaschke in LA, or whoever is in Texas, Miami, etc...

:francis:

I was TAUGHT Statistics been I've yet to apply it to my everyday life. These dudes have learned a lot from Ali but it doesn't mean they attach it to what they do daily.

And I'm not upset that he singled out Jeter. I don't even watch enough baseball to be upset. Hell I would be pissed if it were LeBron that this article was about. He should have called out all of those athletes not just one.

Ok, so you were taught statistics.
You never applied it? Then don't yap away about what a great person your teacher was for teaching you statistics.

A lot of you are out here caping for Jeter because he was singled out.
Again, it's a NY columnist writing about a NY athlete.

Who the fukk was he supposed to write about? A cricket player in India?

Not one person here has been able to dispute anything the columnist wrote about Jeter. Yet many are so butthurt that he didn't cast a wider net.

:cape:

Considering how seldom (if ever) Jeter has been called out during his entire career, it's refreshing to read for once.

Today athletes are scared to discuss or be themselves becuz of endorsements. Ali and others like him wouldve been vilified in todays time.

I use watch all Ali interviews and open forum events, none of these athletes have the balls to do that.

athletes dont OWE us shyt :what: they're playing a childrens game. nothing that they do actually matters

now while its commendable for an athlete to speak on social issues, i dont see the other end of it as going into a 'negative' if they dont

Agree and disagree.... only time a athlete or even these entertainers speaks out today if it's hurting their pockets

Perfect example... Right Now North Carolina have the situation with trannies can't used the same bathrooms and other LGT shyt and u see how Michael Jordan starting to speak out once he heard the nba will take the all star game away from him and they looking at losing millions he couldn't wait to get to city hall and complain..

How about he just not write the article? :yeshrug:

A person who can write such an article during such grave circumstances can't be trusted and you're showing just who you are by peddling this garbage. We're celebrating a great man's life but you're focused on who didn't live like him.

Then don't yap away about what a great person your teacher was for teaching you statistics.

But if my professor did a great job of helping me understand it, why not give them some credit? :yeshrug:

The saddest part is you're still thinking this solely about Jeter. You only see what you wanna see and that's cool.

True nobody owes anybody shyt in this world but standing up in something you believe(especially when you are seeing boys, men and women that look just like you being murdered with no consequences or thought) says a lot about your character and the power of your platform. Ali has become the mythical negro like MLK for the likes of whites and every other non black.
Muthafukkas are rewriting history knowing damn well they hated this black man for years because he was loud, aggressive and spoke the truth.
You are free to say, think and have your own opinion but when these athletes and Stars have millions of dollars, the fingers on the pulse of the youth(nobody is saying "Hey I want to be like Melvin the mailman because he works hard and always treats people well"), kids are looking at the fast money and a way out of the hellhole America created with no opportunities, no education and they still killing black folks like back in the 50s and 60s'. Athletes and Entertainers have so much more in terms of economic power to were they can pool resources and help(on the low or out front) to make a change in the political realm and in the community. That's the problem. nikkas are scared and have become castrated because of paper. Jim Brown, Ali, Kareem and some many others stayed give out work.
But I don't expect a white person to see this because you muthafukkas don't really have anything to worry about except the new artisian mustard coming out on Wednesday.

It's not only about Jeter.
But it's not only about "everyone" because that's an ambiguous way to deflect from the topic.

Ali was great PRECISELY because he did speak out.
Most of you all commented in his RIP thread about his impact because of it.

And yet when the questioning of why other great athletes with arguably a much greater platform than Ali ever had don't choose to address anything EVER (goodness, just once would be nice) you guys have a problem with it?

You all commend Ali for setting this incredible example and path, and yet you hold NOBODY to the fire for not actually walking it? Especially the biggest baseball star of the last 30 years?

And with regard to @the cac mamba who said:

athletes dont OWE us shyt :what: they're playing a childrens game. nothing that they do actually matters

So nothing Ali ever did mattered?
Nothing Jim Brown ever did mattered?
Nothing Kareem Abdul Jabbar ever did mattered?
Nothing Bill Russell ever did mattered?
Nothing Pat Tillman ever did mattered?
