Would cost him $50-60 million(Inflation of new cap) over 5 years if he signs this off season. The agents job is to keep up with every detail about contract negotiation. I wouldn't expect a player to know every single by-law of the league. It's the agent's job to keep up with that. So the agent needs to be the one looking out for the player in that type of situation. The NBA sure isn't looking out for you like that. Melo probably had no idea it would be like it is now, or he didn't care and took the money. But anyway, he has it better than a lot of former players that use to be in the league. They wish they could play now.
