Rakims subject matter as of 03 was not in vogue for nearly a decade and Rakim having actually been in that street life as a youth didn't want perpetuate that myth.

Rakim said Dre wanted him to do more Gangsta related material and he didn't want no parts of that

I saw the God MC at one of his concerts. This one fan up front gave him a Paid In Full Vinyl with a sharpie attached to it. Rakim held up the album and the crowd went nuts. He then gave back the record to the fan and kept rapping without signing it:mjlol:

I'll admit though his concert was kind of disappointing. He relied on the crowd rapping most of the lyrics to every song.

He usually dont do that. Also. Dre MOST DEFINITELY mismanaged Rakim. And it's not just about the gangsta rapper shyt either.

I wouldn't say he mismanaged him, just not a good fit.

Yeah, been a knock on him for a while.

Rakim didn't want to compromise his art for some Dre beats, I notice the doper the beats, the more sick and twisted the lyrics are. A good example is Relapse. All them beats are fire, but look at the content, it's all not listenable.

It was all bad timing honestly. He signed to Aftermath some months after Em released MMLP and Dre was doing those singles with Eve, Busta, and Mary J as well. He was also filming The Wash and then got right into working on The Eminem Show. Right after that was when Dre got into legal trouble with the Truth Hurts joint Addictive (the sample that DJ Quik never cleared), which pretty much screwed Rakim and Truth Hurts and then 50 Cent blew up and Rakim was out.

Rakim was never a priority on Interscope because he didn't really have the greatest track record from a sales perspective with his first two solo albums

i suppose they were mismatched now that certian examples hav been made. but why not do a project w/ a dj premier instead? seems they couldve easily made that happen. his lack of material is odd.

this.

Primo was supposed to contribute to the Oh My God album too. I was excited af.

A Rakim LP with Dr. Dre and DJ Premier :feedme:

too good to be true :martin:

He did live up to his full potential...He was a very limited lane rapper...What he did best was the star, moons, Egypt, number seven, I am a god rap...That is Rakim...

Dre wanted him to bring it back to Earth, and he couldn't, because that's not Rakim....He is the reason why 2Pac followed the KRS 1 and Ice Cube school of rapping...2Pac didn't want to be "super lyrical" or should use Coli terms and say "technical lyricist"...hahaha...2Pac wanted to directly speak to his audience, in terms that they could understand...

Dre wanted Rakim to do the same, be more like KRS 1, Ice Cube, 2Pac and Scarface...You can still "resurrect" people taking this approach, and you will be making Dre and Iovine boat loads of money in the process i.e. WIN WIN situation...

But Rakim does not have the skill set to walk down that lane...

Rakim's full potential is Canibus, and we know what happened to him...

Have you heard "Know the Ledge" or "Mahogany"?

Rakim and Big Daddy Kane are always mentioned as GOATS, yet they were UNABLE to compete in the GOAT ERA...hahaha...

What is the "GOAT era"? Based on your posts, I am guessing you mean mid/late 90s

The 18th Letter was a great album, damn near flawless

The Master was very solid and underrated

As for Kane, his skills never diminished. He just never got a chance to put out an album at that time on a major label. His 1998 independent release (Veteranz' Day) didn't make much noise, but if you listen to it, you can see how skilled he still was (and with an updated late 90s flow). If he had a budget to get some better production and some high profile guest appearances and a bit of promotion, I am convinced that Kane could have had a strong second act in the late 90s/early 2000s

I think the whole Dre situation is what led to Rakim not being as active as a solo artist as he could have been.

From what he said in his book, not only did Dre sign him, he pretty much changed his whole life around. Moved his family to Los Angeles just so he could work on the album, which kept getting pushed back while Dre was busy working with other artists. It was taking so long, his kids had to move back to New York and he spent all of three years not getting anything done. It was a waste of an acquisition.

And then there's the fact that Dre wanted Rakim to change his lyrical approach. It's Rakim. How are you going to tell him what to write about? :what:

I could understand if Dre wanted to produce some songs for Rakim, but I don’t know why he needed to sign him.

IF RAKIM WAS MORE RECEPTIVE TO DRE’S DIRECTION, WE WOULDA GOT A 10/10 ALBUM

RAKIM LYRICALLY IS AN A1 EMCEE .. BUT NOTHING WRONG WIT SIMPLIFYING YOUR STYLE TO BE MORE DIRECT ALA PAC. JUST LOOK AT EMINEM. WHEN DRE HAD HIM SPITTIN RAW WITOUT ALL THAT EXTRA LYRICAL MIRACLE SHIIT, HE WAS AT HIS BEST. IF YOU TRULY ARE A GREAT EMCEE U SHOULD HAVE THE ABILITY TO DO BOTH, AND RAKIM DOES, HE JUS WANTED IT HIS WAY OR THE HIGHWAY AND DRE DOESNT WORK ON THEM TERMS.

Didn’t Rakim out of his own mouth say that Dre wanted him to rap about gangsta shyt?

Thats NOT Rakim and Dre was insane for even thinking that he could get Rakim to basically change up his entire style. Thats like signing Nas thinking your going to turn him into a Christian rapper
