Jaleel White got heat for doing Myrtle when he was a kid from Carl and Harriet. Character got retired until like season 7 when he was an adult and told them they could bring her back.

The Truth
Men wearing a dress was a fairly new concept that most people didn’t care about back then. It wasn’t seen as malicious against black people, especially when the comedians themselves created the character.

Jamie did it with Wanda, it was hilarious

Eddie played an entire family and it was hilarious

Robin Williams probably had one of the best roles in his life when Mrs. Doubtfire dropped..

Wayans did it and it was hilarious…

Tyler Perry is probably where the negative stigmas began.. I know there was a little talk back then because that was his MAIN character and his bread and butter as a personal role.

Martin was not criticized for that en masse......
small pockets were unhappy with it but there was no internet for them to congregate together on back then so they were scattered.

most folks were indifferent at best. Besdes show was hilarious.

Martin got a free past in the first 2 seasons of that show and could basically do whatever he wanted. Crazy that he turned out to be the biggest thing (in a major way) from the House Party era considering he was a minor character.

By the second season of Marin he was headlining his own movies because he had next. But for reasons we all know, he fumbled that shít but still managed to recover and get his career back on track.
He is an American Success Story. I'd read that autobiography.

I was too busy laughing. I don’t know. Martin was the man back then. I think he got more shyt for Big Mama’s House than anything on his sitcom

Most unnecessary character ever. That show did go from being Family Matters to Jaleel White and the Pips though, I get it,

Disagree.
And I think people have just run with and repeated this. Comedians have been doing drag as a cheap sight gag for decades.
Comics (and actors) trying to make it will generally do near anything directors/producers say to land or keep a part in a project to boost their careers.
White, Latin, Asian actors have been given drag roles/had drag suggested to "spice up" a role. If you go through your head, you'll remember all the ones who did it for skits, tv and film roles, etc
Tom Hank's,Robin Williams, the Church Lady on SNL, Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, etc and near every tier below them.
These white comics doing drag gets forgotten when this "Hollywood wants Black men in dresses" line comes up.
I respect anybody who goes into entertainment and sticks to their guns about what they won't do on camera. But I definitely don't buy that "oh, last generation didn't know what was happening""Chappelle lifted the lid off of the conspiracy" line here.
Yeah but Dave's interview is from the mid-00s in the early 90s when the Shanae nae character became known No one in the general public was calling out black entertainers wearing dresses. Black intellectual culture critics or other people in the entertainment industry probably were. But the average Joe was not. Worse I ever heard about Martin during that time was "He Stupid".

I remember in school I thought it was lame af that you had so many men wearing dresses comedy bits in movies

Most adults during the time was strictly on get money time and didn't care about what role they had to play.
Look at Eddie Murphy career post Beverly hills cop
He was a bigger offender than martin
