you dont need absolute elite talent to succeed in team-based games besides basketball. again, assembling talent together and gluing all the pieces is far more important.
atletico madrid almost won both its league and CL this year with talent that isnt quite elite save maybe one-two guys (but not top 5 or top 10 players)
giants are leading the mlb with no real elite hitter or elite pitcher
and so forth, and so on
playing the value game will always lead to better results long-term than handing out big contracts to anyone. all the big contracts are losing propositions long-term, especially in baseball.
You cant hide a bad quarterback...what are you talking about. They touch the ball every play....it's too volatile of a position too hide.
Theres plenty of cases of great defenses making it to the superbowl or winning it with great defenses and mediocre offenses

plus your argument about touching the ball every play (not even bothering to say 'offensive play' ) is laughable, hence me mentioning the center
a qb who doesnt cause stupid turnovers is all you need to be successful in playoffs
I know it makes you mad but its the truth. I know every time a defense shyts on good qbs you'll find excuses as to why it happened, besides that a good defense >>>> good offense
There aren't many QB's who can't help themselves from making stupid turnovers. You take that for granted....hiding a QB is one thing...hiding them into not making stupid turnovers...especially in close games is another.
You map out this plan saying all you need is a game manager who can make the throws and rely on his defense to do the rest....who are these guys? And who are these defenses that can carry those guys? It always comes back to Alex Smith....Alex Smith became a good QB, and that type of turn around is rare.

alex smith didnt become a good qb really, hes decent enough, and is on good teams. maybe andy made him a better qb, since his play in the offs last year was quite great. but the point is hes not spectacular or even that good, but good enough to not cause stupid turnovers and let the team as a whole win the game instead of living and dying with arm of one player.
hell, sanchez was good enough for yall those two years when he had talent around and that crazy D.
like Ive been trying to tell you all the time, game manager is what the qb position is all about. anything beyond that means that youre trying to compensate for something else. if youre gunning it out because your defense is ass, guess what, need good D to win. just dont make mistakes, move the chains, let the D take care of the rest. game of football is quite simple.
I agree that eliminating turnovers is not that easy, but you take stupid turnovers away from someone like palmer and he becomes a good qb. some qbs just make shytty mistakes and are not good qbs because of that.
with qbs, imo you have the elite few (like 4-5 qbs) that really help win and garbage few (boller, anderson, etc etc) which you really cant win with. everything in between is passable. jets were able to 'hide' mark sanchez so bar is not set as high as you think
Mark Sanchez was a turnover machine and you simply could not win with him long term. I don't know why you continue to use him as an example. The 08 team with Favre and the 09/10 teams were loaded with FA's on their last go around hoping for a Super Bowl. The match in itself was silly and ultimately got Tannenbaum fired.
as far as compensating for something else...thats what NFL football is. You simply cannot pay everyone...but paying the guy that has an impact on every offensive snap is a good start. Having the good QB playing on a rookie contract obviously is better. But ultimately those guys get paid because they are very difficult to replace. The position is hard to predict on the next level.

Sanchez wasnt suddenly not a bad QB because it was the playoffs. The guy started 16 games in college....there was no chance it was going to work.
So when Alex Smith gets his 100 million contract does that make him elite now since its the same pay grade as Peyton Manning
