I was telling someone this the other day. We late 70s and 80s babies are the last one to acknowledge the greats of the league pre non live broadcast.
I don’t think this is true at all

Most of us don't think of anyone from the 70s and before, aside from Dr J and Kareem and the 60s icons.

Artis Gilmore is a guy who was 70s Ralph Sampson and I bet he has not been mentioned more than 50 times on this site.

30/20 is some obvious gas but Sampson being the OG Wemby is on point. Legendary college career and probably would’ve been considered one of the NBA ATGs if his body didn’t betray him
He was not on track to be an all time NBA great.

He made one all nba team and only averaged 20 ppg twice.

The Dr. J’s, Rick Barry, Frazier, and Maravich were in all kinds of branding done by the league. Highlight cassettes, instructional videos that used to come on early ESPN or early weekend morning TV had these guys on there. They weren’t putting bums or randoms on there like say “Inside Baseball” with Johnny Bench would. And of course now we don’t because the talent now overshadows them and recency bias

I don’t think Barry and Frazier were as much as much as Maravich, Kareem and Dr. J.

The NBA for us starts with Magic and Bird.

When I said ATG I just meant like 1st ballot HOF, top 75 status. I don’t think he would’ve been in Duncan or Shaq talks

Also he was a 2nd option and only played like 2 years before the injuries started

I think he’d average 25/15/4 because this era shoots a lot of jumpers. They don’t feed the big man in this era.

Yeah I saw him play :flabbynsick:
