neptunes never had a year when 70% of songs played on urban radio was produced by them. i have never seen anything like this before in my life! :mindblown:

I really do not listen to radio so I'm not arguing that Mustard isn't flooding the airwaves, but come on man. Because I haven't heard much of his stuff/wouldn't know if I did, I couldn't say for a fact that he hasn't had a run like this, but I'm pretty damn sure he doesn't come close to the Neptunes circa 2002. This list is comprised of only songs that have at least charted on Billboard:

  • Usher - U Don't Have To Call (#2 US R&B/Hip Hop) (January 12)
  • Fabolous - Holla Back (Young'n) featuring Pharrell (#17 US R&B/Hip Hop) (January 26)
  • Busta Rhymes - Pass The Courvoisier Part II featuring Pharrell & P. Diddy (#2 US Hot Rap) (February 12)
  • N'Sync - Girlfriend featuring Nelly (Remix) (#5 US) (February 26)
  • Destiny's Child - Emotion (The Neptunes Remix) (#10 Dance Club) (March 12)
  • Bow Wow - Take Ya Home featuring Pharrell (#21 US R&B/Hip Hop) (March 12)
  • No Doubt - Hella Good (CO-WRITTEN by Chad/Pharrell) (#1 Club Dance/#3 Pop/#13 US Hot 100) (April 13)
  • Nelly - Hot In Herre featuring Dani Stevenson (#1 US/#1 US Hip-Hop) (April 16)
  • Busta Rhymes - Call The Ambulance featuring Rampage (#2 US Hot R&B/Hip Hop)(May 13)
  • Clipse - Grindin' featuring Pharrell (#8 US Hot Rap) (May 14)
  • Nore - Nothin' featuring Pharrell (#2 US R&B/Hip Hop) (May 14)
  • Beyonce - Work It Out (#11 US Hot Dance) (June 11)
  • Clipse - When The Last Time featuring Pharrell & Kelis (#7 US Hot Rap) (August 6)
  • LL Cool J - Luv U Better featuring Pharrell & Marc Dorsey (#1 US Hip Hop) (August 13)
  • Justin Timberlake - Like I Love You featuring Clipse (#1 US Hot Dance) (August 20)
  • Faith Evans - Burnin' Up featuring Missy Elliott & P. Diddy (Remix) (#19 US R&B/Hip Hop) (September 7)
  • Toni Braxton - Hit The Freeway featuring Pharrell & Loon (#2 US Hot Dance) (October 15)
  • Snoop Dogg - From Tha Chuuuch To Da Palace feat Pharrell & Arch Bishop Don Magic Juan (#16 US Hot Rap) (October 15)
  • Common - Come Close featuring Pharrell & Mary J. Blige (#18 US Hot Rap) (November 5)
  • Clipse - Ma, I Don't Love Her featuring Pharrell & Faith Evans (#40 US Hot R&B/Hip Hop) (December 3)
  • 702 - Star featuring Clipse (#9 US R&B) (December 10)
  • 702 - I Still Love You featuring Pharrell (#49 US R&B) (exact date ???)

Leaking into the first three months of 2013 so as not to omit a few big hits from early that year...

  • Snoop Dogg - Beautiful featuring Pharrell & Charlie Wilson (#3 US R&B/Hip Hop) (January 28, 2003)
  • Jay-Z - Excuse Me Miss featuring Pharrell (#1 US Hot R&B/Hip Hop) (February 4, 2003)
  • Baby - What Happened To That Boy featuring Clipse (#11 US Rap) (March 8, 2003)

Let me know how that compares.

:what: thats the point. Lil Jon is caking in 2014, because of his run that gave him such a popular name in the early-mid 2000s...

Regardless of what music hes playing today, hes one of the biggest names in MUSIC in 2014, damn near 15 years later.

DJs/producers get paid off relevance. Lil Jon making more money off DJing/Producing in 2014 than Mustard. So how is Mustard more relevant than Lil Jon ever was let alone THIS year alone? Because Mustard songs are on urban radio and lil jons arent ?

If I put Mustard on a flyer, he couldnt fill a venue of 1500 people. But Lil Jon could and does it successfully around the world every damn week.

But this is the coli so dont let me come in here some rational thought and shyt

Music > Hits ... ALWAYS!

I respect the hustle of Muzzard but there is no musicality to it. It is really a formula. It says more about today's consumers versus him. He's feeding a demand. During The Neptunes run, he would have got the :camby:.

Leaving the comparison to other producers with good runs aside, this is the first time that I remember a go-to producer having a style that people have not only emulated with relative ease, but had success with. I had to check a few times to make sure that Mustard didn't produce "Fancy" a couple of times.

It's funny though, because dude is doing shyt that producers would get ROASTED for in the past, like homeboy basically just adding some extra drums and synths to old 90s house records, and eating.

The most notable thing is that he at least makes good bases for beats. The two best Mustard tracks I've heard are ones he handed over to Kanye to work on ("Sanctified", and "I Dont Duck With You"). Big Sean has a solo version of "Sanctified" out there that uses the original version of the beat (along with a video that someone posted a while ago where Mustard played the original version of the beat while he was talking about giving Ye 100 beats), and that shyt is pretty terrible.
