dj quik always gets the dr. dre "jr" treatment, but where does he really rank among dre, rza, premo?

Never liked Quik. In fact, he's never made a beat that's had me addicted. The hottest beat Quik ever made was "Justify My Thug". And if I'm interpreting Quik's statements on Life & Times, Jay-Z was the one with the ideas to even bring those samples together.

Maybe it's my East Coast bias (which I won't deny - I prefer East Coast beats over all other coasts by far) but even then.... I've loved tracks from other coasts. and none of them have ever been made by Quik.

The dude may be a fantastic engineer, and maybe knows boards like the back of his hand. But his actual beats just aren't interesting to me.

Beats are far more about the imagination and soul than the technical shyt.

He's up there just wish he would get more placements and release new music.

I think he’s a tier below the elite guys like Premo/Easy Mo Bee/RZA/Marley Marl

He’s not in a tier with RZA, premier and dre, and tbh he’s not even close to that tier.

I’ll die on that hill.

Does he have any actual hard beats? Or is it all that goofy funk shyt?

I think Quik might be the most overrated producer of the 90s, but if someone can put me on to some actual hard shyt, I’ll be happy to eat my words

I think Daz is a better producer tbh.

Quik is actually too funky for the average hip hop head because its obvious he's a jazz musician at heart. His stuff is simply way too intricate and layered for most who just want to bob to the beat.

Said it before that Quik should start dropping instrumental projects of extended pieces where he just lets rip with his vision rendered in aural soundscapes. I'd buy a tape.

Could call it ‘Quik’s Groove: The Album’

Quikstrumentals.

Like a whole series of them. Show the world a side of hip hop they didn't even know exists and he'll finally have his own lane, his own rep and his own credit that he wants badly and deserves as well. The David Blake/DR thing really shortchanged him due to politics as his sound was all over those productions and mix but no credits.

Rap, as it stands, was and is too narrow for his talents. Dre as well hence the Planets project having potential but Quik could change the game in a minute as the whole world would listen to his compositions as they take you on a trip. Brand new genre and so many west coast greats would be out of retirement to pitch their own discs because the funk runs deep in the trenches.

No he’s not & it has nothing to do with Boom Bap either lol. He’s just not as nice as the ones I listed or had the impact they did either
I don’t think they can do this

Link doesn’t work. Search yt for Quik’s Groove playlist and enjoy

He's as talented if not more but the gang shyt held him back, just seemed more distracted than the other great producers. Not that Dre, RZA, Premo didn't all have their issues but it seems they were able to compartmentalize and preserve a space for their craft.

I love seeing when someone has a plan for another that may be be bigger than the plan that person has for themselves

When I met DJ Quik I told him that I fully believe that - I also told him I was the person who wrote him the multiple page letter when he was in jail which was mainly all about me asking him to produce the next Tupac album. I was like 12 years old

Actually though, he helped Eminem through ‘Loyal to the Game’ which literally sounds like the first AI album

Anyway this is the moment I met DJ Quik and if somebody didn’t film it than it would’ve been an isolated experience that would sound too far fetched to be true. He also got me a drink and offered to smoke with me and Hi-C but I didn’t smoke at the time and had already had a few drinks so I probably would’ve briefly collapsed in the smoke circle but the fact of the matter is that I met an idol of mine by doing something I love and in my lifetime I’m not sure I can expect moments more pure than that

Yeah. Honestly the content is of a time and place and is limiting to the reach of a legacy. DJ Quik should be doing “Do I Love Her Part. 2” and songs like the one he put out recently where he dropped the Eazy-E/MC Shan voice
