I'm one of the biggest Quik stans on here. I think he's just as talented as Dre behind the boards (production/engineering) and definitely a better rapper. But he burnt bridges, is bi-polar and didn't strike gold with artists he aligned with in comparison to Dre. In an alternate timeline, how much bigger would Quik be if he pivoted to producing more R&B, funk, alternative music?

I’m willing to bet he’s more accomplished in his field than anyone on this board are in theirs. The ease with which people say wild things about legends online is just disheartening.

He was never going to replicate Dre's knack for signing stars. The west's fall off also hurt him, but that's perhaps something he could have done better. Instead of wasting away in the west working with no name artists, he could have headed to NY more. He worked with Jay for the Black Album, and I was always curious why he didn't set up shop more there, do some engineering/mix work, shop beats etc. By the time the west coast came around again in 2011/2012 Dre was once again in the driver's seat with Kendrick, but there was still room to do shyt. It just never came to fruition. I know Quik did some stuff for Kendrick's second album that got scrapped, alongside Battlecat and other Cali producers.

If he was a better producer, he would've made stars out of the artists he worked with.

We didn't know who a Snoop Dogg was until we heard him on songs with Dre. Dre was in NWA. Eminem was an underground MC before Dre. Yeah, 50 had buzz as did Em before linking with Dre, but Dre elevated them far beyond where either would've been without him.

Kendrick is the only one who who really didn't benefit from Dre. He already had his own style, sound, and vibe without a Dre and none of the songs we know him for were produced by Dre.

I already spoke on this in the other thread but he was in the mix and could’ve been as big as Dre but he didn’t get certain breaks. He wasn’t in the game as early to play a more pivotal role in the development of West Coast Hip Hop. He’s a pillar but not THE pillar that Dre is.

Also, as brilliant as he is musically as others have said he’s regional so that makes it harder for other regions to get into it. Others brought up a great point that he didn’t work with more talented artists and he easily could’ve. He could’ve and should’ve been like a godfather to the new West and ushered in the new acts like Nipsey, Kendrick, YG(especially him, he’s from the same set as Quik) that way he has his own family tree and a bolstered legacy.

I know Quik dabbled with meth during the late 90s/early 00s so it’s safe to say the deaths in his life, tough luck in the business, and brief time with drugs prevented him from being that.

Dre at the very least launched the careers of two of the most famous rappers on the planet (Snoop and Em), and they went on to launch careers of their own. You gotta create a tree

When you look at the careers that fall by the wayside in hip hop it's overwhelmingly the nikkas that never put anybody on or have a history of bad relationships

Gucci Mane got out of prison bigger than he ever was because he had put on the entire current gen of Atlanta rappers and they were happy to return the favor for all the support, cosigning, and free studio time Gucci was giving nikkas. On the other hand I remember hearing TI complain about Atlanta rappers not giving him his flowers but what rappers TI put on?

The lesson here is if you have a talent or gift that grants you success you better be changing some lives while enjoying that success
