The thing that you and others like you fail to understand is that your personal ideas of what Nas should be as an artist has no affect on Nas. What's painful for you to see brings Nas joy. Therefore, when you claim he is dumbing down for paper or fake love is your personal belief. Nas has never deliberately oversimplified his musical content. Yet, he is unfairly thought of as being a hypocrite. The man is human and he holds no super powers.

Vlad didn't come up in the NYC mixtape scene. He moved there in the 2000s when the mixtape scene was just a few years from tapering out. He was a computer programmer prior to that. You're talking like he really has stripes or something. You could wipe his entire mixtape discography off the face of the earth and literally nothing would change.

Nastradamus was a throwaway that was released the same year and it STILL went plat. And Nas was also all over the place in 99-00 cause of all his features on hit songs. Even tho it was his only NON platinum album and had actually just went platinum as well. This is why Jay lost. He was talkin to the "fans". He was catering to the ignorance of the fans. Nas won cause Nas was talkin to Jay. His diss effected Jay more than anyone else. U could see by Jay's flustered reaction by the whole thing.

nas won because he did his best Jay impression against Jay,and he was the underdog....Why was he the underdog?because everything Jay said about him on that record is true....People was off Nas and he was forgotten,IWW was most peoples introduction to Nas,but the truth is nobody was going crazy over that album or considered it classic,nikkas certainly wasn't going crazy over like folks wanna have us believe,it was just a great album that dropped in crazy time,where bigger and greater shyt was goin on....So people who bought it based on hype wasn't that into It Was Written....And much of theThe Illmatic cult felt the same way Vlad did about it,so who was loving this album like that?

Matter of fact look at the sales,i checked wiki and its worst than I thought,that boy Nas numbers was steady fallin.....from 4 million with It Was Written,to 2 mil with I Am,to 1 million with Nastradamus....Doesn't matter of you agree with the perception,the perception is what it was for a reason....You don't just keep losing sales like that when everybody loving your shyt like yall claim,and it wasn't from lack of Nas trying to be at the forefront and compete commercially at the time.


Nas was next in line after Biggie died,only to be eclipsed in popularity by Puffy and matched by Mase,eclipsed in popularity by DMX,Ja and cant forget Jay....This not even including the south movement that rose to the forefront...Nas became second tier,maybe een third it aint no question....Nas was a afterthought point blank period.


It was Written made me say "Hmm I like this guy",I Am had me :kanyeshrug:,Nastradums had some cool songs but was my last cop from this failure...Jay latched on to a perception that was real,you acknowledge it was real,you just write it off as idiots because you enjoyed that shyt....this is the common perception which is why Takeover was so impactful,which is why folks thought it was a wrap for Nas,which in turn made his comeback seem that much greater.
