Nobody is held to as high a standard as Nas.
i don't care what anybody says, iww was a classic. the only reason people were hating on it back in the day was because nas went "commercial" with it and it wasn't what they expected from him at the time. but looking back at it, that album and it's polished sound layed the blueprint for all the other big cinematic records released in the mid to late 90's. biggie and jay took the formula and ran with it. there wouldn't have been a life after death if it wasn't for it was written and vol. 1 - 3 would have sounded different too. i am was mediocre and nastradamus was trash, but the original album he envisioned back then would have been a classic too, so fukk what a dj vlad thinks, illmatic isn't nas only good album.

Just watching the video now. I think Charlamange has some points.
And honestly I know many many people, famous and regular people, that have other albums other than Illmatic as their best Nas album.
I can understand where Vlad is coming from about It Was Written and Nastradamus it terms of there was a purity with Illmatic that maybe wasn't there with those two, but Nas did become a more powerful figure over time so you aren't gonna get the raw unknown street kid album because he grew in stature and experience.
Also I agree with Charlamange, you don't become a Nas with 1 great album, Snoop had a great album but people don't really put him with Nas for the most part, because he didn't back it up like that, Nas has to me 4 classics and some other very very good albums and some good ones. I actually think Nas has 1 of the most consistent discographies, his discography isn't perfect, Nastradamus and Street's Disciple for instance were flawed but also there was some really great records on each.
To each their own of course but it seems like something a fraud might say, bigging up Illmatic cause of the huge acclaim but then saying there nothing else. I also understand some may genuinely feel that way and that's fine though I strongly disagree, but from Vlad it has no credibility, I would have been interested to question him further about the albums to see what he really knows and if he's really taken this shyt in, I'm not sure he has.

NY State Of Mind is a minimum top 10 greatest hip hop song of all-time. It's not a completely outlandish statement. My favorite Nas song is I Gave You Power though.
