nas has one universal classical if you want to be honest. He is one of the greats regardless but i got say he has had one of the most disappointing catalogues for an artist with his skill level. As a fan I will say his first two. For an album to be a true classic it has to be critically and commercially acclaimed. Like bigs LAD album. Just because you like it doesn't make it a classic album. I personally enjoyed I am for what it was, a dope mainstream hiphop album with a little something for everybody. It was a good commercial album that I still enjoy to this day but its no classic. Either is lost tapes for that matter. Which is very dope but it had no impact on the culture and hiphop landscape. It didnt break any grounds or set any trends like illmatic.

You didn't have to break any commercial ground to have a classic then. To have a good commerical album, you had to have crossover songs and appeal which was very frowned up on until Bad Boy blew up with their formula.

And LAD was VERY cysed due to Big dying. It's the reason the album even got 5 mics.

If any other rapper put out It Was Written, theyd be considered GOATs. But Nas gets shytted on.

Regarding the topic at hand. fukk Vlad. Illmatic, It Was Written and Stillmatic were stellar albums. Life Is Good was great too, given where Nas is at in his career. Hes still got it.

Illmatic is Nas only tier 0 undeniable classic, but its not the only good album he has.

I Am was bootlegged so heavy he has to redo it. And it came out and still went multiplat. Noone I knew had a prob wit I Am outside of the initial disappontment of it being changed. Nastradamus was a throwaway that was released the same year and it STILL went plat. And Nas was also all over the place in 99-00 cause of all his features on hit songs. And the QBs Finest shyt with Oochie Wally n all that. Which NOONE I knew in real life has an issue with. Son u had young idiots sayin Illmatic was Nas' only platinum album when that beef was poppin. Even tho it was his only NON platinum album and had actually just went platinum as well. This is why Jay lost. He was talkin to the "fans". He was catering to the ignorance of the fans. Nas won cause Nas was talkin to Jay. His diss effected Jay more than anyone else. U could see by Jay's flustered reaction by the whole thing.

nikkas talkin bout commercial success when Illmatic was a commercial failure and most people actually went BACK to it after fukkin with IWW heavy.

...it's because Illmatic is widely considered the GOD HipHop album and for some reason people tried to pigeon hole Nas as some type of backpack rapper so when he left that "Nasty Nas" style behind, that segment of fans were salty. Critics falsely claimed IWW was commercial when it actually wasn't. IWW is actually a step up lyrically and conceptually from Illmatic. It's also less radio friendly than both of Big's albums before he passed and also less radio friendly than Reasonable Doubt. Illmatic is the real "Gift and the Curse" for Nas as far as those types go
