Rakim, KRS, MC Shan.. yeah they was puttin it down. G Rap, PE.. but most of the NY Hip Hop scene in the 80's wasn't on no street shyt and it wasn't mainstream. When NWA came out they changed the game. Rappers use to curse but not like NWA did.

You can't even compare the mid/late 80's to the mid 90's. The west coast's contributions basically took it away from just New York. I grew up in that era by the way. Too Short cursed but he wasn't mainstream.
