Do folks actually enjoy getting treated like zoo animals when they travel to Asian countries?

had people stroking my arms, stopping me in the street or stroking my locs and even giving me a nee born baby to take a picture with in some parts of Vietnam

Didn’t really matter.
:wtf:

I've never seen an albino person irl, I don't see how that gives me a pass to treat them like an exotic animal. It's not about sitting at home, I've traveled and didn't tolerate this nonsense, no one is saying not to travel, just have some self-respect.

Like I said, it’s up to you. It’s a small insignificant part of a holiday and not even the whole of Asia. White prime got the same experience too.

I have I just refuse to go to Asian countries cause I don’t like the vibe I get from the videos I see :yeshrug: Same with Egypt from what I’ve seen.

It’s like you gotta be cool with being a circus act to go there.

In college me and some classmates spent a summer in Eastern Europe and it wasn’t like that frfr. Some looks states of course but not like what I’ve seen going on in Asia
I agree with the east asia thing, but not necessarily egypt. Its not homogenous in the same way eatsern europe or East Asia are. When i was down there a few years ago, i was more or less ignored. Until you as a black American open your mouth, they assume you are either A sudanese or a Nigerian looking for work. And thats before considering their own native black people that live in southern egypt.

And this is if you have long hair. If your hair is short they assume you are one of their own. Its the fro, braids, dreads, etc that is the giveaway. A whole lot of Arabs i met in Cairo and Luxor had the exact same skin tone as myself. So its like splitting hairs trying to figure out someones ethnicity.

Exactly.

I had people stroking my arms, stopping me in the street or stroking my locs and even giving me a new born baby to take a picture with in some parts of Vietnam

Didn’t really matter. They weren’t rude and were more inquisitive. I’d rather go there and experience thing than complain at home online :yeshrug:

Japan had people going out their way to make me feel comfortable as they knew I wasn’t local.
Is it true it’s crucial to have an interpreter or understand some Japanese if you go there? Obviously I know it would help but I’ve traveled internationally to a couple places without knowing the language and go out around fine but I’ve heard it’s diff in Japan.

you gotta consider the education difference between the people behaving this way and yourself. As someone living in this country you have been systematically taught to be tollerant of others since gradeschool . If you immigrated, then these values were instilled later in college. Tolerance is synthetic and taught, Its not a natural mindeset.

It also doesnt escape me that many of these zoo-exhibt events occur when you go to the rural parts of these places; where education is lacking. Going to Jeju or Nagano is dramtically different than going to Itaewon Or Shinjuku. Itd be wise to expect the same amount of decorum from the locals in those places as youd find in the rural vest virginia. Similarly, i gaurantee you that your soceoeconomic equal in chinese, korean, etc society wont be giving you the zoo treatment.

And i dont think its unique to the asian countries either. I once did humanitarian work in East Africa with an american contingent composed of black people, white people, indians , etc. and i found it hilarious that once we left the better educated urban areas of Nairobi, Kigali, or DaresSalam, my white and indian colleugues were getting the zoo-exhibit treatment, while i could blend in seamlessly.:whoo:

I’d learn simple good morning, afternoon and evening. Hello with honorifics, good bye, etc.

I just bought a book plus my Mrs is fluent but we didn’t holiday together. So some shyt I had to get her to translate on the phone and send to me

In Kyoto it was a much bigger issue than Tokyo.

But one thing, it’s just like doing your daily in USA but Japanese. You know the sign for toilets, you can point at food, go to the shop buy something and hand over money, etc. If you’re Black they know you’re foreign and will cater to you and try English.

Depends where in Asia you go. If you go to China or South East Asian countries like (Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos) or South Asian countries like (India, Bangladesh, Pakistan) then yeah, expect to be constantly stared at wherever you go.

But if you going to countries like Japan or South Korea then you're not really going to experience that as much, at least not in the major cities. It's 2023 not 2008.
only because us military runs japan korea tgey basically us states

living in America you are exposed to every race on earth and it's not a big deal
china has 1.2 billion people and most of them have never seen a foreigner, let alone a black person in real life
so when they see you, it's like a special moment in their life

or these wholesome moments with curious Chinese kids

FOH . "Special moment". They doing too much.
