I was just using that as an example of music and songs coming from a humanistic, real and genuine place
and I don't really consider hip hop "soul" music, so come with better examples than this for me...these other cats on here's opinions I can't speak or :hubie:

Excellent thread.

The souls has been lost in mainstream music. Many of these singers today sound their age. Back then, it seemed like singers came out sounding older than they really were. I happened to be researching about D-train the other day. Dude was in his early 20s when he came out and this was in the early synthesizer days

James "D-Train" Williams is one of the most underrated vocalists of all time.

Plus, think of the inspirational lyrics he delivered on hit songs in the 80s:

"Keep on, keep on
Keep on steppin' 'til you reach higher ground
Can't nobody turn you 'round
Step on up you can claim the highest star
Straight ahead, it's not very far!"

Good Rnb artists nowadays will never blow up,because people like garbage.Reggae is where all the soul is, mainstream and otherwise, cause it has a standard for talent and a religious backbone,as well as addressing social issues easily.Part of me feels RnB got dumbed down and overtaken by hip hop when all the artists could sing about 95% of the time was love amid a changing environment.

Today's mainstream music is ONLY geared towards the youth (teens). In the past, music was geared towards people of all ages. A grandmother could enjoy the same music as her grandson. That's not the case anymore. Mainstream artists do not sound mature or make mature sounding music. Everything is dumbed down and made to appeal to the kids. Mainstream artists are focused on making hits popular with the youth, not real music. That is why it sounds more soulless.

I'mma call all your bluffs and say you really don't want that music.

You're complaining just to complain.

I would post some stuff but this thread is too narrow minded for that - I agree there’s nothing better than 70’s R&B but there is some good music out there in the mainstream and a lot more not in the mainstream...

All facts. I used to post examples of modern R&B fire in threads like this, but then I realized that people don't actually want it :yeshrug:

What are we defining as soul ?

A better question is do the buyers of today's music have soul ?

They sell what you buy

So Stop buying bullshyt

Here's a random list of mostly current artists it's whatever on whether they have soul but do the listeners ?

I agree with this. There are some gems in your post but in my opinion none of these songs have much soul. Great songs tho. I can't stop listening to the last 2.
