Do we really need celebrities?

Celebrities are modern day royalty and anybody can be one as long as they have the media on their side

But do most actually do anything? Like if every celebrity disappeared tomorrow would there be a crisis?

Why do we hold them in such high regards when they are just people?

if celebrities disappeared tomorrow then a lot of my favorite sports would have most their league wiped out, my favorite artists would disappear, my favorite shows would be ruined...
