Idiots would invent something new to believe in anyways
Like society?
A lot of our thinking is deep-seated with religious thought. Or at least patriarchal systems (such as modern society) are based on it.
I type on a phone so I can't go as deep into it as I'd like but to be brief.

@The Wave alluded to or stated, religion is the foundation of a highly intelligent society. Because in just about every religion, what is the main focus? Order and control.
Man's natural inclination is toward order and control. The reason we have modern society as we come to know of it is based on that, and the fact that man attempts to relate himself to what is defined as arcane or 'sacred' such as God. So man builds institutions that give him some form of relation to what he considers to be divine.
We can take a look deeper into earlier systems where kingship was practiced based on the belief the king could consult with the gods. That king had to maintain a regularity in his day-to-day activities. The primary reason being is that the king was as divine as the cosmos so he had to function as the cosmos, out of order. An example of this is the sun: it "ascends" and "descends" at regular, consistent intervals. So as long as the king maintained order, societal life would continue to function. Kingship in its purest form is a religious practice.
To not delve deeper and round back to the point, religion is based on control and order because without it we'd have chaos. There is no society in chaos.
