Do You Consider Rap a Subgenre of Hip Hop?

Right now Im taking a hip hop history class... this adjunct ass professor just claimed rap as a distinct genre


I had the face through the entire lecture today

I mean 10 years ago we used to say "TI and Wayne make rap, not hip hop"... but in retrospect its all the same

Hip hop is a culture. There are many facets within the culture rap music, b boying, spoken word, new jack swing, the style of dress and clothing. All diff art forms withing the main culture of hip hop.

we used to call it RAP in the 90s........period. the term hip hop was used in reference to the music sometimes but to us it was RAP. Hip Hop will always sound like some nerd ass backpacker shyt to someone from my era

but not all rapping is hip-hop

Just like not all singing is singer-songwriter genre

Rapping is a musical device

Yeah he said hip hop include elements of breakdancing, social upliftment etc.... and rap is more lyric based

Essentially he was just describing different eras in hip hop.


But after that...dude said so much bugged out shyt, I damn near tried to hijack his authority. Then he asked if I did the reading and I fell back
