Do you consider track a real sport ?

But this is a discussion that I've always had amongst friends. How much skill is really involved in running ?

For eg. You can develop and hone specific skills within other sports like football or basketball. You can practice drills to better your hand eye coordination and tactics to improve your game. But with track you're just running.

Speed is something that's pretty much out of your control for the most part, would you agree ? Some people are just fast. Some people just aren't. You can train and enhance breath control to maximize your speed but for the most part isn't it just inherent ?

Thoughts ?

There is technique within it. Yes you have to naturally be fast twitch but managing the start and how you run relative to where you are within the distance is a skill :manny:. Just think of football players that be coached to faster 40 times with the proper coaching.

Yea I feel you. I'm not saying that there's absolutely no technique involved don't get me wrong here. Pacing yourselves at certain distances etc is the strategic side of it. But how much of that do you think determines the success of an athlete as opposed to natural born speed ? For eg. I've never been particularly fast myself. If I go learn about breathing techniques and stride form etc, sure I may knock a couple seconds off but I'm not gonna become Usain Bolt or anything cause I'm naturally not that quick. Am I making sense ?

I wonder what could have happened recently to lead to the OP questioning the validity of Track & Field as a legitimate sport.

:jbhmm:
Like I said I saw the thread which I have linked in the OP and the topic came to mind. It's a discussion I've had IRL so I just wanted to get the forum's view on it.
