Firstly a toast to all you well wishers & cunning corporate types......the accolades were much appreciated..the Daps are on me
To the bitter, hateful & doubtful types Much success to you, even if you wish me the opposite
Also its not ass kissing its more like
'distinguishing yourself from the herd.'
To reiterate what some have said there is a difference between
kissing ass, backstabbing coworkers &
networking. Networking is nothing but socializing for the sake of helping yourself and others, building mutually beneficial relationships with people across the organization. I make a serious effort to remain out of office politics, & I think I succeed in that on the most part. This is mostly because I tend to bounce between our sites alot up & down the region etc.
Like everyone I have missed opportunities & gained others - but the great ones I have been able to take advantage of absolutely would not have happened without my having networked a lot and gotten myself recognized in a positive light. No need to kiss anyone's ass to do that. If you have no choice but to kiss ass to go anywhere, you're probably lacking in other important areas.
To quote a conversation with my superior whilst discussing some interviews/unit restructuring-
"One of the worst aspects of being a boss is that everyone has got great credentials, but great credentials do NOT guarantee that someone can apply any knowledge whatsoever. You actually end up learning more about people when they tell you about themselves"
^^^^^ Straight from the horse's mouth
