Do you think ghetto names really affect a child's chance in life?

I plan on being a successful man, a shining example of black excellence, but I want to name my son Demetric (Duh-Meech-Rick) or Kelan (Key-Lynn) & my daughter Saneilah (Sa-Nay-Luh) or Neidra (Knee-druh):lupe:

I know we hear of hood names affecting employment and the like, and I want my kids to start life on the right foot. My name is Swahili, but no one knows what it means, much less know any Swahili names so I get lumped in with the ghetto name crowd anyway:skip:

My name is actually pronounced like the first name that you have listed, just spelled differently. I suggest that you have another name for him. If people even have trouble saying the name, it gives some people pause. I started to put my nickname on resumes. My nickname is as American as Apple Pie. My children have more accessible names if that makes sense. Being a person in position to hire, I'm sensitive to this issue but many others are not.

Economist answered this question in the book and podcast Freakonmics.

They asked if Black names affect success and came to the conclusion that it does not but the education level of the mother has the strongest influence

If I feel like googling I'll post the link

Reviewing resumes I am more inclined of pulling the unique name than a generic name like a Chris or a Brandon. Any resume I come across with those name I usually skip over anyway.

That’s not fair. What if they are well qualified for the job?

Not every resume is looked at when trying to look for new hires no matter how great or bad it is. You have to pick and choose. Just because you submit a resume for job a there is a big chance it don’t even get pulled. Names play a role especially a unique name shows up I’m interested at looking at the profile.
