Welp since im already the bad guy round these parts fugg it :yeshrug:

If you take a survey of education level and salary at a gucci mane vs coldplay concert...i think we all know what the results will be :shaq2:

Do the same for some equally ignorant country artist and you'll most likely
get similar results to the Gucci Mane demographic.

But I forgot this is The Locker Room where bullsh1t reigns supreme.

I don't know if this was posted but I will post it anyway.

Music vs. Intelligence. Can music make you stupid or smart?
"Virgil Griffith, the creator of WikiScanner and a grad student from CalTech did some research which studied the relationship between musical styles and bands and the SAT scores of the people who listened to them. He found that the smartest students listened to Beethoven (average SAT of 1371) and the students who rung in at the bottom of the SAT scores listened to Lil’ Wayne (average SAT of 889)."

I personally don't believe that an SAT score is an accurate representation of intelligence but I do believe he has a point.

There are many different types of intelligence. I also want to point out that being educated does not necessarily equal intelligence. Just throwing that out there.

With that said, there does seem to be some kind of relationship between music and intelligence. There also seems to be a relationship with the types of music one listens to.

I honestly don't think it has anything to do with genres of music. I think has more to do with lyrical structure and instrumentation.

Like another poster said, those who prefer more complex lyrics and instrumentals generally think about things on a deeper level. Does that mean that they are smarter than everyone else? It depends on which definition of intelligence is being used.

I will be honest and admit that I have felt this way about music for a while. If a guy's music collection is made up of artists who usually make catchy music with simple lyrics, I will not date him. I know it sounds shallow, but I automatically assume that we have nothing in common. If he listens to a mixture of both, then its fine. But if the majority of his music is simple, then I avoid him at all costs. I, myself listen to both complex music and simple music as well, but I prefer the complex over the simple and I prefer the type of guy I date to have similar taste in music as well.
Exactly!!!!
@ the bolded.... c/s i much like you have always been very discriminating about music taste when it came to dating guys in the past. i wouldn't even give certain dudes a SHOT based on what they listen to predominately. i can say i would haven't given my guy a chance if he had sh*t taste in music. it's just that important and "telling" of a factor to me. :yeshrug:

I just knew that when Paz tried to throw Lex Luger under the bus, people would post "Grooveline Pt. 1" up.

...but I don't think your taste in music always determines your intelligence for this reason: people listen to/make music for different reasons. Some people listen to music for the performance of certain artists on tracks rather than their lyrical content. I can listen to Nas, Talib Kweli, Mos Def for lyricism, but there are times where you want to listen to something less lyrical (Waka Flocka, 2 Chainz) for the production and the performance on the track.

That's the beauty of music. If you have diverse taste, it can be situational & depend on what kind of emotion you're trying to enhance at the time.

I'm from Detroit and have lived in the hood my entire life. My friends grew up in the same area and growing up, yet we were all into rock and hip-hop. I was more into lyrical underground rap until I got older became an athlete. It helped expand my tastes. I enjoy orchestra music so I put "One-Winged Angel" on my computer playlist but if I'm super amped up, I want something with more bass & energy like "BMF" or "Guerilla Radio" (which I like for the message and the instrumentation).

All of my friends can play instruments by ear and their tastes are just as diverse. From Kanye to Coheed & Cambria, Coldplay to Mozart to Drake. :manny:

Some people just like music because...it sounds nice. LOL. It makes you feel good. It pumps you up for the occasion.

One of the most intelligent girls I know from college (Meghan Tonjes) ended up on the Ellen DeGeneres show because she taught herself guitar and started playing covers of songs she liked on Youtube and editing her own videos. In college, the chick was a computer genius, but she still likes Britney Spears b/c it's fun to listen to. :stylin:

Can't just put people in a box based on what moves them. Don't Plies & 2 Chainz have degrees anyway? What's the average intelligence of a Michael Jackson or Prince fan? :ld:

yeah but that's what Jennybell and i aret saying. diversity is cool if you still like at least SOME complex music.

a case like yours isn't the same as some redneck that ONLY listens to country or some ignoramus that ONLY listens to "booty hoes booty" music.

You're giving more credence to this data than the person who compiled it is asking for

I'm looking at the methodology and it's based on top 10 most favorite artists/genres at different colleges' Facebook networks and the average SAT scores at those colleges

If you look at the top 10 list for say Harvard (#4) vs. the University of Florida (#126) they're basically the same... all classic and alternative rock bands

If you search the list for Lil Wayne you'll see he only shows up at much lower places (at #255 , 534, down to 1349)

So overall this is highly imprecise and it would be wrong to accept it as anything but a joke loosely based on reality... you can tell it's not serious by the site's name

Instead of taking it to mean "if you listen to Lil Wayne you probably have a low SAT score" you should take it as "if you go to a college where Lil Wayne is a top 10 most popular artist then you probably have a low SAT score / at least the average of you and your peers is bound to be low" :yeshrug:

Yeah. I ended up missing a few posts while typing mine up and talking to folks, but I can definitely rock with that so long as people aren't close-minded.

I personally don't believe that an SAT score is an accurate representation of intelligence but I do believe he has a point.

What exactly is his point?

all this "research" he did shows that he found people who scored relatively high/low on a standardized test listened to a specific person.

and from what this chart says, the gap between rap and classical music isn't much.

Besides, that Mozart effect shyt has never been proven to make you smarter...a dumb nikka can listen to Mozart all day long, and not become smart, and a Smart person isn't gonna turn dumb cause they listen to Gucci all the time.

i can agree with that.... i guess i just feel like it's still saying relatively the same thing about certain kinds of music and the listeners they attract. :manny:

Education does not exactly equal intelligence. There are some people who have doctorate degrees and build computers but they are also incredibly ignorant and believe that black people are inferior.

Listening to a diverse group of artists and songs (like you do) is totally different than someone who primarily only listens to one specific type of music and songs. Diversity is always a good thing. It is a sign tolerance and other good qualities.

I do agree that we cannot put people in a box based on music preferences. But I admit that I do it a lot.

You are basically saying that those who listen to Lil Wayne have low SAT scores.
