Insignificant posting from an insignificant poster
a homegirl of mine that works in HR told me they're a waste of time....the recruiters don't look at cover letters...they barely pay attention to the first few lines over your actual resume....

Then what are they looking for?

Stopped doing it 6 months after I started
Never helped me or changed anything
The keyword trick helped me the most
The keyword trick is when you look at the application and put some of the same words in your objectives list. It passes the robot tests and gets you a person to actually look at the resume

As someone who had to deal with all the shyt my lazy-ass HR team didn't want to do, don't bother. Nobody reads that shyt. shyt there was a point that none of them read resumes.

there are literally hundreds of thousands of people sendin resumes for the exact position you are applying for....if they don't see what they want in the first few skims of your resume it gets thrown in the garbage or shredded....i've literally stood there and watched shorty do it in front of me while I was shootin the breeze with her...and the resumes were impeccable...i didn't know the person but just based off the resume I would have hired them if I owned a firm....:mjcry:

Yes , but I'm in education.

So I wrote an email to each principal of the schools I was interested in.

The body of the email was the cover letter and I attached my resume.

The principal reaches out to schedule the interview , if they wanna hire you then you fill out the district application and they recommend you to HR.

Edit: we also do the same for my wife, in healthcare. Find the email address, cover letter is the body , attach the resume. Fill out the app later

Yes but it’s damn near a requirement in my industry.

Best idea is to know what works best for your industry and adjust accordingly.

I’ve written one, but it wasn’t very effective, as the jobs I’ve gotten I didn’t have one.

I just hired a senior analyst a week ago. HR didn’t look at any cover letters, and I didn’t either. I don’t think it hurts to have one, though.
