This year no red meat and no fried foods.

Still thinking about adding on no alcohol too.

Lent has actually gotten me to stop drinking soda, slow down alot eating fast foods and eating candy/chocolate because after it was done i didn't go indulge in it like others usually do. I looked at it as i went this far without it i might as well keep going. :manny:

Then you're not partaking in Lent, you're just giving something up.
There's a purpose to why people participate in Lent.
I am aware of the purpose, and when I was younger, yes.. it was in the way of penitence.
Now? Not so much.. as I admitted so. If that's just giving something up, then :manny:

so who gonna explain what this shyt is?

In short.

they have this thing called Carnival, which is very big in places like New Orleans, Trinidad, Brazil where people come out and celebrate for a few days scantily clad, arousing each other, getting black out drunk, seeking out strangers to have sex with, etc, etc. Basically a celebration of getting the "final things out of the way"

Then, after they've looked in the mirror and recollect the things they've done, they go hyper puritanical in repentance.

I don't participate in Lent but I did complete a 21-day Daniel Fast in January and it was rough. I don't think I'll be giving up anything anytime soon unless God takes it from me.

A lot of times people don't go back to the same thing.

The purpose of lent is to give up something "bad" for you. To teach you self control and self awareness.

Something "bad" can be anything. Liquor, weed, sex, candy, spending, cursing, fighting etc.

I actually gave up soda and juice last year for lent. Haven't had soda or juice since then, and lost some weight because of it.

It doesn't have to be all deep and spiritual like y'all are making it sound. Like I said, for me its a personal challenge. To prove to myself that I have some sort of self control.
