People will latch on to anything that makes them feel like a part of a perceived elite and sexual labeling is the newest ego stroke. Same goes for healthy eating and travelling in many cases. It would be interesting for academia to dissect this like you said though I'm guessing herd mentality and a need for validation shapes it all.
