You not understanding the task. It’s not just the song that’s sonically best you’re also gauging impact relative to that time.

IIRTW is probably a better song but has nowhere near the impact of NY State of mind. Any song that’s in thr top 10 of all time you should immediately in 1 sentence say what its legacy was/is. Fight the power represented the frustrations of black America. Nothin but a g thang set the stage for west coast dominance of that era. Dear mamma was completely unique showed a depth in rap that didn’t exist. NY State of mind changed how people rapped.

What is IIRTW’s 1 sentence legacy? I’ll wait

you can say that about any song on illmatic

without IIRTW, nas would be OC status

that's the legacy

No, you can’t. :comeon: NY state of mind is firmly considered as the lyrical ‘Omg’ moment from that album. If you weren’t there, you can just say that.

And….is that your 1 sentence submission for IIRTW? :picard:

‘Without it Nas would be OC status’. What does that even mean

Yo favorite rapper doesn’t have a more classic song than Summertime.

That’s the level whatever y’all are suggesting has to hit.

I’ve said it before but I have Blahzay Blahzay on this list before Jay or Nas.

Top 10 hip hop songs is actually a very dope concept as it separates the weak from the obsolete real quick as you'll see where the timeless talent for pushing a pen rests.

Hard Knock Life and being Biggie being gone is why he is what he is today. Ultra talented though. Great even. Top 10 song ever? It just doesn't work.

out of the 4 GOATs, dear mama is the only song making the list

and me and you gonna have to live with that

Yea, I’ve already said as much :wtf:

Im replying to your original comment that ‘if any Nas song made it it’d be IIRTW’. Imo It would clearly be NY state of mind for the reasons I mentioned .

Still not gonna make top 10, but that would be his highest ranking song in a ‘greatest hip hop songs all time ’ context

I don't really like the song anymore but cacs and pitchfork/rolling stone types seem to really love 99 Problems. I think i've seen that high on their greatest rap songs lists.
