This. If you want to be able to move up as you enter the mid point of your career, a degree is a must. If you are content staying technical, then you can get away without a degree. With that said, there are a lot of programming positions out there that list a college degree as a minimum requirement.

But yeah, you don't really need a degree to be a programmer.
Why would you take a non-degree holder over someone who doesn't have a degree?

Granted, the latter might mean more of a hobby interest than someone who is using it for a job, the person who has the degree has some standard of proof of what their skills and exposure is. The person without the degree is just a gamble.

if they both know their shyt, to pay them less.
They aren't many competent programmers on the streets of America.
This is not fast food restaurant where you can get anyone of the street.

Ask hiring managers and they will tell you. That's why even a non-degreed programmer can command 80 -90K with few years of experience.

Average companies don't have the financial clout to bring in HB-1 visa's for cheap like Microsoft and the big guns in the business.

I think most managers would rather hire a person with a degree. But given a chance of hiring a 22 year old with zero experience and a degree and a 22 year old with three years of real world programming experience, some managers might go for the real world experience.

But the preference is for someone with a college degree for most large and prestigious businesses.

I know for a fact that it would be nearly impossible to get hired at a top tier consulting firm without at least a Bachelors degree unless you are coming in as a contractor.

getting a degree ain't nothing. you can grab one that doesn't mean anything online.

i know a guy who didn't go to college... parents all kids 20k after high school to go to college. he didn't go to college but built an isp.

a few years back charter communications (which is bankrupt, and the big dog around here) offered him i think $20 million but he refused to sell.
all he hires are hippies off the street. and now hired even his own family who went to college:deadmanny:.

this a guy who me and my roomies all used to drink with. it's been a while since i talked to them.

bill gates and them built empires without degrees.

In a dynamic technical world where things keep changing/improving ever year, I'm not sure most managers will give a job to you just because you have a degree...

You have to show competence and and willingness to learn. We hired a Network engineer 6 months . I recommended him over a guy with a masters to my boss ....he came in and has already hit the ground running doesn't need any mentoring.
He knows his shyt. If we had hired the other guy there is no doubt in mind someone would have had to hold his hands for at least 3 months or even more.

This is true......

for programming...

But you kinda need to degree unless you plan on being a high payed slave for 15 years....
then eventually watch some young nikka out do you when the company migrates to some new shyt...... Plus he has a degree. Then what will you do? You can't even go home and look your wife and kids in the face if that shyt happens.

Gonehead' n get that degree.... so you can then get wealthy and act as ignorant as you want to ... Forever

lol...

are you a programmer?

I know about 200 programmers. You can get money every hour or year..... and still work under managers, be told what to do, where to be ,and basically be a working slave (expect the pay is decent).

Or you can get a degree.. keep updating your skills... and have to luxury of not really being a slave.
