Why would you take a non-degree holder over someone who doesn't have a degree? This. If you want to be able to move up as you enter the mid point of your career, a degree is a must. If you are content staying technical, then you can get away without a degree. With that said, there are a lot of programming positions out there that list a college degree as a minimum requirement.
But yeah, you don't really need a degree to be a programmer.
Or get into a career that at least has branches you can easily springboard into.then be shyt out of luck when you move on from that job
go to a doctor without a degree brehsWhy would you take a non-degree holder over someone who doesn't have a degree?
Granted, the latter might mean more of a hobby interest than someone who is using it for a job, the person who has the degree has some standard of proof of what their skills and exposure is. The person without the degree is just a gamble.

Other fields?yeah, but you lack the even cursory level knowledge to look at other forms of employment or fields of work

if they both know their shyt, to pay them less. Why would you take a non-degree holder over someone who doesn'thave a degree?
They aren't many competent programmers on the streets of America.if they both know their shyt, to pay them less.

This is not fast food restaurant where you can get anyone of the street.
Ask hiring managers and they will tell you. That's why even a non-degreed programmer can command 80 -90K with few years of experience.
Average companies don't have the financial clout to bring in HB-1 visa's for cheap like Microsoft and the big guns in the business.
In a dynamic technical world where things keep changing/improving ever year, I'm not sure most managers will give a job to you just because you have a degree...I think most managers would rather hire a person with a degree. But given a chance of hiring a 22 year old with zero experience and a degree and a 22 year old with three years of real world programming experience, some managers might go for the real world experience.
But the preference is for someone with a college degree for most large and prestigious businesses.
I know for a fact that it would be nearly impossible to get hired at a top tier consulting firm without at least a Bachelors degree unless you are coming in as a contractor.
But you kinda need to degree unless you plan on being a high payed slave for 15 years
for most people
lol...Nope
