that's all luck is
Exactly.
I used to make music with several people who went on to be successful in the entertainment business and the only reason that happened was they meet the right people at the right time and received help and I didn't. In some cases I was more talented at writing and producing than they were and had a stronger work ethic. Went to the same showcases and performed in front of the same execs but my brother didn't work for atlantic records like my homie from high school, I didn't have a cousin in the NBA to found my career like a few others I know![]()
This type of shyt goes on all the time but a lot of people either act oblivious to it, or pretend it doesn't make much of a difference in the end. Millions of people get an extra leg up every day and find themselves in positions they never would have been in if not for random family/friend connections or being somewhere at the perfect time.
Of course to acknowledge this is to concede that the well-loved "bootstraps mentality" is largely a myth; or at the very least, way overblown. But It's clear it makes people uncomfortable to have to confront the idea that there are those who can and DO get advantages over others that are beyond their own personal control.
