Phil was in the habit of trying to play these stupid mind games as a team executive, a totally different seat from that of the head coach. There's no way that we're enjoying the fast start and looking excitedly to the future if Phil stays around. You wanna give him credit for Porzingis/Ntilikina because he "was in charge" of the scouts, fine. If he's still around, he's probably further soiling the team's credibility around the league, probably would not have gotten a credible return in exchange for Melo, forced the team to run the triangle, which probably means that Hornacek is miserable, the team is miserable. And there is also probably no clear direction for the team, since Phil could never make up his mind between rebuilding and "win now". Part of the excitement of this team is that for the first time in a long, long time, there is a sense that the front office has an actual plan, an actual direction that they're working towards. We'd still be spinning our wheels with Phil.
I'm even inclined to throw some credit Dolan's way. Because after that Michael Kay interview after the Oakley incident, I was convinced that he didn't care and that he only liked having Phil around to take all the bullets that would normally be fired at him. He cut his losses and parted ways with Phil, even though I think it was more Mills telling him "yo, this dude is crazy and got us looking and sounding bad on these streets". If that hadn't happened, we'd be nowhere near what we're accomplishing now.
