Stopped going to church 20 years ago, and my grandmother was convinced I’m going to hell.
To this day, I’ll see people from church, who were old when I was a kid, yet are still alive, who still ask, “When are you coming back to church?”
I do worry about meeting a good woman who wants me to go to church, and raise our kids in the church. But I’m not down with church. I think the way black people practice religion does not help us navigate the reality of life. We’ll congregate to pray, but not network, and exchange resumes and practice group economics.
Yet, most of the black pastors I was aware of in the local churches were attorneys, or some high earning career.
