Im from Atlanta, this isn’t true at all. We not bout to play no regular New York shyt like drill rap or none of that bullshyt. But growing up my favorite rappers outside of PAC was mostly all New York. Raekwon , Nas, AZ. I had 3 albums from Fabolous and of course BIG. Radio stations always gonna play local music the most, but in Atlanta it’s lot of shyt we got . Now if you go to Texas, they legit play they own music and you might not hear nothing else. But Texas do everything that way. So I get it

I’ve been living in and around Atlanta since I was 14. nikkas listened to all manner of East Coast rap. Nas, Jay, Wu, 50, etc.

The South Vs The East shyt wasn’t a big deal until snap music took off and East Coast AND West Coast rappers (rightfully in my opinion) started calling that shyt wack c00n music. Southern rappers and fans closed ranks, banded together, defended all of it. The rest is history.

We did when I was growing up. Some of it was hard to access unless you had family up there to bring you tapes though in the summer.

It didn’t dominate our radio stations because both Houston, NO, and Atlanta had our own scenes. The most prominent NY rap got lots of play though, even at local parties.

I don’t care to listen to the newer NY rappers unless its Pro Era or something similar

Not according to the legends.

Dungeon Family had an interview way back, and Rico and Sleepy said all they listened to was "east coast" rap because they had the best music. They said listening to PE was what inspired them to go diggin' for records. And that they would go to NY just to get records. They said Rakim, Kane and KRS are some of their favorites. Andre and Big Boi said they listened to NY rap to get their skills up and loved the Bay rappers too.

Scarface said he has Nas, Jadakiss, Tribe, and Jay-Z along with Cube and NWA in his top rappers, of all-time. So the whole "south doesn't listen to NY" sh*t was always bullsh*t. Everyone I know from the south grew up listening to all the NY classics too.
It’s not necessarily fair to use rappers as a barometer though. They’re obviously way more likely to listen to more varied rap music than the average fan or dude growing up in the area is listening to. It’s like an NBA player knowing random players from the past; it’s cool, but it doesn’t prove that the average, casual fan knows who the guy is.

It's not just rappers.

I said people I know too. So artists and people I know who just grew up in the south. I've never known or heard anyone from the south or anywhere else say they didn't listen to NY rap. That would be weird AF. Like someone in NYC saying they don’t listen to West Coast sh*t. You're not a real head if you're only listening to whoever based on where they're from.

To piggyback off of this, Andre mentioned after Phife Dawg passed that Outkast got a record deal partially by rhyming over The Scenerio remix as an audition, and that they were in talks to do a group project that never materialized because of Phife dying called "A Tribe Called Kast".

And during that KRS vs Kane Verzuz, Missy Elliot live messaged to Timbaland "remember we did one of our first demos to this?" when Buckshot came out to perform "How Many MCs" during KRS's set.

Saying the South didn't fukk with the East Coast would be like East Coast dudes saying the East didn't listen to the South during the 2000s.

It’s all anecdotal but I’ve definitely run into people who don’t listen to east coast music at all. I still do in fact. (North Carolina)
