It's a real history behind that saying. There was a time where the south fukked with east coast rap. This came into play when east coast rappers were openly shytting on southern rappers. Then it became a narrative.

up until maybe around 1998, sure. And even before then it's spotty at best.

The east were okay with Lil Jon and were ehhh with Yin Yang, then Laffy Taffy came out and the east condemned the south as a whole. Like we werent on some hip hop shyt like everybody else. So the south was like fukk the east.

Cats like me that listened to everything were the outliers. You had to be Hov or 50 to get play in the south. If you wasnt regional or super heavy on BET/MTV/popular radio, you wasn't getting played.

Im not gonna be one of those cats talking about ":gladbron: I listened to it and I know somebody else did and they played it on the AM college radio from 2am to 2:45 am on Thursday morning so yeah the south listened to east coast!"

The South does listen to New York rappers. The problem is you bum ass clowns like to talk down about the South, not fully realizing that your ancestors came from the South.

Or unless your parents came from the Caribbeans, which to seem to be the case for damn near every New Yorker.

Some how Dmx, Jay, 50 and them had sold out arenas all over the south while southern rappers were performing in barns and clubs :unimpressed:

This is one of the dumbest takes in hiphop, as if BET, MTV, the source etc was different in different cities

Im from Atlanta, this isn’t true at all. We not bout to play no regular New York shyt like drill rap or none of that bullshyt. But growing up my favorite rappers outside of PAC was mostly all New York. Raekwon , Nas, AZ. I had 3 albums from Fabolous and of course BIG. Radio stations always gonna play local music the most, but in Atlanta it’s lot of shyt we got . Now if you go to Texas, they legit play they own music and you might not hear nothing else. But Texas do everything that way. So I get it
Nah. Growing up in Texas, New York absolutely was played.

I think it depends on how old you are. I think us 30 plus guys probably listened to a lot of NY music as NY was at it's apex.I think that kinda died some with the generation that followed.

It's funny cuz I'm from Florida and really didn't like southern rap like that until the T.I./Wayne/Boosie/Gucci/Jeezy era came around. My favorite rappers to listen to as a kid were Pac, Nas, and Kiss. It wasn't until I got older when I went back and got acquainted with the Scarfaces, 8Ball & MJGs, ect.
