There is NOTHING mediocre about Illmatic nikka. U nikkas is crazy.
My opinion is its average at best. Your opinion is that it's dope.
BUT IT'S FACT THAT IT FLOPPED AT RETAIL
IT'S ALSO a fact that only east coast or wanna be east coast nikkas have ever got top tier props despite their lack of performance at retail.

They arent on the same level as far as depth and content. It has nothing to do with being a Nas fanboy. I can think Doggystyle is the better album and still feel it’s not on the same level depth wise. Only track nikkas can even name is Murder Was The Case. Which was a straight up banger and the most creative track on that album.

if the only track a nikka can name on doggystyle is murder was the case..he isnt a nikka at all...

8 nikkas from say a neutral area not east coast not west coast...all who grrew up in the era..

play both albums....i bet money more nikkas would know doggystylye songs than illmatic..

As I look up, at the sky
My mind starts trippin', a tear drops my eye
My body temperature falls
I'm shakin', and they breakin, tryin' to save the Dogg
Pumpin' on my chest and I'm screamin'
I stop breathin', damn I see deamons'
Dear God, I wonder can ya save me
I can't die my Boo-Boo's bout to have my baby
I think it's too late for prayin, hold up
A voice spoke to me and it slowly started sayin
"Bring your lifestyle to me I'll make it better"
And how long will I live?
"Eternal life and forever"
And will I be, the G that I was?
"I'll make your life better than you can imagine or even dreamed of
So relax your soul, let me take control
Close your eyes my son"
My eyes are closed

Murder, "murder was the case that they gave me"
Murder, "murder was the case that they gave me"
Murder, "murder was the case that they gave me"
Murder, "murder was the case that they gave me"

I'm fresh up out my coma
I got my momma and my daddy and my homies in my corner
It's gonna take a miracle they say
For me to walk again and talk again but anyway
I get, fronted some keys, to get, back on my feet
And everything that nikka said, came to reality
Livin like a baller, Loc
I'm havin' money, and blowin' hella chronic smoke
I bought my momma a Benz, my Boo-Boo a Jag
And now I'm rollin' in a nine-trizzay El Do-Rad
"Just remember who changed your mind
Cuz when you start set-trippin', that ass is mine"
Indeed, agreed proceed to smoke weed
Never have a want, never have a need
They say I'm greedy but I still want mo'
Cause my eyes wanna journey some more, really doe (check it out)
Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray the lord, my soul to keep
If I should die, before I wake
I pray the lord, my soul to take

Murder was the case that they gave me
"Murder was the case that they gave me"
Murder was the case that they gave me
"Murder was the case that they gave me"

No more indo, gin and juice
I'm on my way to Chino, rollin' on the grey goose
Shackled from head to toe
Twenty-five with a izz-L, with nowhere to gizzo, I know
Them nikkas from the other side recognize my face
Cause it's the O.G. D-O-double-G, L-B-C
Mad doggin' nikkas cuz I don't care
Red jumpsuit with two braids in my hair
nikkas stare as I enter the center
They send me to a level three yard, that's where I stay
Late night I hear toothbrushes scrapin' on the floor
nikkas gettin' they shanks, just in case the war, pops off
Cause you can't tell what's next
My little homey Baby Boo, he took a pencil in his neck
And he probably won't make it, to see twenty-two
I put that on my momma, I'mma ride for you Baby Boo

I’m sorry nothing on Illmatic blew my mind like this record. The beat, hook, production, flow, lyrics, concept, & story was just:wow:

shyts a perfect record

kurupt and rbx on serial killer...blew my mind and the hershey loc on pump pump...rode that beat...above the rim..made it even better

What's a better movie? Infinity War or Shawshank Redemption

What's a better Saturday night? Going to the club or Reading a great book

What's a better place to live? Mississippi or Paris

Etc...

You comparing two things that shouldn't be compared, they're way too different and serve totally different purposes. Your choice says more about you than it does the actual quality of your choice.

A better question is: What's a better album?

Doggystyle or Get Rich or Die Tryin

Or Illmatic vs. Reasonable Doubt

I tried to let it slide but fukk it. All you cali nikkas talkin shyt about NY dudes clinging on.

I understand you all wanna cling to your 1 of barely 10-12 classics in 40yrs of hiphop existence.

Snoop- 1 classic, the rest are forgettable trash or average.
Pac- 3 classics
Dre- 1 classic
Cube- Dikk on East on his first release. 2 classics
NWA- 1
Kendrick- 1
Dogg Pound- 1
Xhibit- 1

Hates me to do this since I got 2 Cali MC’s in my top 5, but lets not go to far, you’re not fukkin with NYC as a whole.

This isn't true at all. Nas talks about dropping out of high school and why. He talks about why he is an atheist. I mean there's all kinds of lines and verses on that album that's more than him rapping about rapping.
You losers will literally say anything. Nas the atheist has "god's son" tatted across his stomach huh? I feel sorry for you clowns.

You can say Doggystyle is a better that's fine. But keep it hundred about it you don't have to downplay Illmatic because of it

What?

Nas was 17-20 when he made Illmatic. He was an atheist then. He didn't believe in God. Anyone who listened to Illmatic would know that. He stance changed between Illmatic and It Was Written. Nas has gone from atheist to Muslim to Christianity to believing the sun is god.

What does this have to do with what I said? Yes. More people would know Doggystyle because it’s the bigger album.

You're making my point. There's nothing deep about those lyrics. Nas was a young, ignorant high school drop out with limited life experience.

When did he explain why he wasn't an atheist on illmatic. Off the top all I remember is the lines on represent about not believing in gods and "none of that shyt"?

How is that making your point? Him being a "young, ignorant, high school dropout with limited life experience" has nothing to do with depth. People with college degrees with a wealth of life experience can still be the most shallow. The "young, ignorant, high school dropout with limited life experience" has professors writing books about Illmatic.

listen both are incredible projects

but doggystyle is like the first bad boys film ( a fun action movie with top of the line producation and two young stars at the top of there game snoop and dr. dre )

(I know in real life Daz and Warren did a lot of the background work for the album but that was not in the marketing or promotion of the album)

an illmattic is like requiem of a dream its a beautiful and thoughtful manifestation of the futile struggle of being a smart black kid in giuliani new york

its just what story speaks to you more :yeshrug:
